Hi there heard a beauty this morning at work. That one of our lorry drivers uses wd-40 instead of car Polish.i just wondered if it was a wind up but apparently not.

Oil without abrasive won't polish, might give short term wax effect though.

I think you're getting mixed up between Polish and Wax/Sealant/Protection.
WD40 is effectively a "water repellant" so in a sense will work the same as a wax/sealant. It will also work to a certain extent as a tar remover.
It will also be very short lasting and when it dries it will be very greasy/streaky and attract dust etc. So it does work to some extent as a "wax substitute", but a very, very bad one.
It is pretty common for racing teams to use on their cars on race day as a quick way of removing the bugs/rubber debris etc.

A friend of mine decided to use it as clutch cleaner.
Funniest part was watching him drive away at .5mph at 3000rpm

I have used WD40 as a sort of polish on a few cars. It doesn't give a polish effect though. - at least not long term.
It's quite good on rough hand painted vehicles (my favourite kinds of vehicles) and it will give it a bit of a gloss for a while, and does help bounce the rain off, for a while.
Generally not worth doing though. I have only done it on metal cars with poor paint in winter months to add a little bit of protection. I haven't done it for years now because a) it's not particularly effective over more than a week or so and b) it does end up looking a bit grubby after a while especially when you next wash it.

Good for cleaning engine bay plastics in modern cars. Make a bay look presentable

I've been using it as a polish for maybe twenty years, it's pretty good for the weekly wipe over during the winter months, and I find it quite good on unpainted plastic. Generally though, Mr sheen is the polish of choice  |

Think I remember seeing it used as a polish on Car SOS? Was a maroon vintage 1940/50s car and they used it on the original paint to bring the colour up.....could be wrong though!
