I need to get an MOT done on my van and can't use my normal MOT station.
I'm considering the options. Having worked at a garage in the past I know MOT's can be a way to create work so was wondering about using of of the local council stations who don't do repair work. While I would rather find any problems I haven't spotted I don't want a failure sheet going onto extra pages.
Does anyone have experience of Gov run stations and are they generally OK ?

Check there's one near you first. My nearest is nearly a 100 mile round trip and I live in one of the most populated areas of the country!

There is one near us, in fact I'm rather spoilt for choice of places to get an MOT done. I've been through all the local ones who have pictures of spotless workshops that I know aren't actually like that, there are quite a few !

Those who don’t do repairs certainly don’t have any vested interest in flogging tyres or wipers which is one way of looking at it. They are generally all as good as the testers in my experience. I use a Halfords Autocentre, but they know I do my own repairs and get on well with the guys there so never have an issue - sometimes get the “it’s an advisory but only just” as they know I’ll fix it.
Maybe look at others you might not consider - BT Fleet and larger Royal Mail sorting centres usually do them - not necessarily advertised but if there’s the 3 triangles on a blue background, then they will do public MoTs.

I work in one .
The big plus , as mentioned above , is that theres no up sell .
But it still comes down to the individual tester , some can be on a bit of a power trip .
I’d always advise to get other people’s opinions on the place you’re thinking of going .

Thanks for the reply's. I've got the added problem of getting it tested as a different class as I have removed seats, it was originally a minibus. I rang the council one a call and they said they couldn't do it as it would come up as a class 5 on the computer. The DVSA have told the tester has to change the MOT class so I am a bit worried, they initially told me it would be a class 4 and then in a later call they said it would be a class 7 !
