No, mercedeslimos is correct in assuming it to be a straight-six XK lump but it's the 4.2 litre, (this Sovereign was a badge engineered Jaguar 420). When you asked about the V8 I don't know if you had the 2½ litre or the 4½ litre in mind? Both were extremely good engines but the 4½ litre is now very rare and, for the 1960's, gave real dragster performance. |

Believe it or not the car is there to be stripped and will be turned into a banger. It's always sad to see old cars losing the battle particularly if the end up being banger raced. I'm a Jaguar fanatic but I personally view the 420 as the low point of Jaguar styling, I don't see much in the way of redeeming qualities. |

I'd disagree. they're a great looking car for the period, especially for a British motor which always seem to be ungainly or oddly proportioned, but these flow quite nicely. Loads of nice little design touches, and would make a great custom, either as a 420 or a mkX seeing as they're so similar. There's too much glass and the curved screen complicates a roof chop, but it's not insurmountable. So Much so there is a full custom mkX out there, owned by a shoemaker.  |

I believe that you're possibly confusing the Jaguar 420 and the Jaguar 420G? Of course I'm a big fan of the 420G, look at my username! I know the difference. Trying to say they're radically different in any way is ridiculous though. They're the same basic design, just scaled differently. Whatever idea work on one with work on the other, regardless of the overall size difference.

I'd totally disagree with your assertion that they're the 'same basic design' with scale changes, I don't think that's ridiculous I'm just possessed of the gift of functional vision. I've always viewed the Mk X / 420G as styling perfection whereas the 420 is the ugly duckling, an S-Type badly beaten with the ugly stick, (which doesn't stop it from being a classic or being of interest to some). As you say, if you work on one Jag of this era you could easily transfer to another. |
