The fella's are here building my driveway today. Do I (a) pay them top whack or (b) pay them the reduced "cash" amount.....which means I'm likely to get no form of reciept......? If I choose option a and it sinks into the ground in a week, then I've still got the hassle of hunting them down. If I take a chance on option b and it all goes tits up, then obviously I don't have a leg to stand on, right? But if it's all good, then I'll have got a few quid left in my pocket..... Decisions, decisions.....either way I'd best not muck them about. Or I reckon I'll finish up with NO legs to stand on.

Tough either way really. Even if they are 'reputable' then they'll still stuff you up if it goes wrong.
I'm sure you'll be fine. There can't be that many bad guys. Good luck with it. I'm jeaous, we'd love to have that done, just too many jobs to come first!
I've done a brick pavior drive way as a DIY project before. It's not that hard. Well compacted hardcore, minimum 2 inches. 2 inches of sharp sand. Blocks with small gaps between for the next stage. 6 ton plate vibrator over the lot then sweep more sand in the gaps and vibrate again.
The most important part is making sure there is sufficient fall to good drainage, you don't want puddles!

I was gonna go for a full-on brick pavior option, but the only way I could have afforded it was to do it myself - my DIY skills are pretty mediocre at the best of times. So instead these guys are doing me a nice pavior / gravel combo plus putting in a lovely drop kerb so I don't knacker up the car. Seems OK so far, but I probably would have prefered mot harcore to run-of-the-mill hardcore. At least it's nice and deep, well compacted and I know the drainage will me OK.....and the drop-kerbs looking v.nice. I suppose only time will tell . Maybe some piccies tomorrow of the zin zinner looking lovely in it's new "bed". Edit: It's finished! Well that's me several hundred quid the poorer. At least I now have somewhere slightly more ned-proof to keep my car!

Looking nice. Your house is better than living in a cardboard box, or Milton Keynes or having greek pillars on your 1930s suburban 2 up 2 down.
