I'm sure somebody kinda asked for this. Let's see the 'unconventional' ones. The weirder the better. I'll start with this: The Commer TS3. A 3 cylinder diesel. With six pistons. Two strokes. And a supercharger. I remember working on these when I was in the RAF, they were a Lister two stroke diesel engine, used as an auxiliary engine on the air sea rescue launches.

TS3 was an amazing sounding unit. The blower was known as a "Commer-Wade". A friend of mine fitted such a blower to a 6/80 Wolseley in 1972. Apparently most of the failures associated with this unit were down to low oil pressure. The 6/80 Wolseley was a small bore SOHC engine with absolutely no pretensions to fame, but my friend made his go so well that people had to give credit to his work. My normally aspirated 2 litre A40 Devon - which he devised - shut him down, but he certainly proved a great deal about blowers on lesser capacity engines way back in the 60's. This is a period photo of him towing me at highly illegal speeds in the early 70's after I nearly stuck my ancient camera through the front screen of an Alfa Romeo... www.kilroy.co.nz/cars/car02.html

^^^ A German U-boat generator, driven by an axial-flow diesel turbine. Working and very noisy! Another opposed-piston engine, there were plenty about.
Both in the Engineering museum, Holtenau, Germany.
