Bit of advice sought. I've sold my XJS to a Czech guy via ebay who has a German address, no feedback or purchase history and only been a member for one month. Having won the auction he's not been in touch or responded to my messages. It'll be cash on collection only and while he could be genuine & very busy, it all sounds & feels a bit fishy to me. Anyone had this sort of thing before or thoughts on how long wold you leave it before sacking him off and relisting? He's a photo of my car near Snowdon so this post is a bit less boring.

I sell nearly all my cars to Europe. Generally speaking I've found European buyers/importers on the ball, communicative and will have asked questions before buying. Most pay by bank transfer but some come over with cash. If you've heard nothing from him after a couple of days I personally would assume time waster and re-list.

I've sold a few cars on ebay to foreign buyers, I've not been let down by one yet, however I'd give him 24 hours from when you sent the first message telling him he'd won it, and after that offer it to the next person down the bidding order list.

If I'm buying something big like a car, especially an XJS, I’m watching it till the end. So even if the buyer was in this country I’d sack it off after 24hrs

I've sold two cars to a German and a Czech. Better than UK buyers TBH.

Quick update. After being dicked about by two other foreign buyers the car was finally sold this weekend to another German guy
Maybe I'm being a little over cautious but I still don't want to get scammed and was wondering so about the best way to take payment. I'm assuming paypal, bank transfer or cash. Also, would you take a deposit so that know he's definitely coming?
Any thoughts greatly appreciated

Any thoughts greatly appreciated I've only ever taken cash although I'm sure other methods are just as good. You have every right to ask for a holding deposit ( Paypal?) though. If they don't want to play ball with that one at least you will know whether they are kosher or not.

NOT Paypal for anything collected (except a small deposit). It's a known scam, they file for a refund and you have no proof of delivery. You are not protected.
Cash or a transfer you can see arrive.

Cash, just insist on it., forewarn the guy that you want cash only, in pounds not euros etc, he can pay the costs of conversion before he comes to get it. Simple. I wouldnt buy a car in germany and try to pay in anything other than euros unless the sale stated otherwise

Bank transfer is fine by me, but I'd want it cleared if it is a foreign currency. Paypal is a funny one. If done as a gift I understand it's as good as cash.
The last few cars I've sold have all gone through bank transfer bar the last two. On one cash deal I got the wrong amount of cash. Thankfully, it was a mate and the debt was settled quickly. That was on a £10k+ car too.
If it were me, I personally wouldn't feel happy about taking a few thousand Euros in person with me over the continent. I've done similar things for previous cars (but the length of the country), but bar three cars, most of my cars have been sub £2k cars, not £5k+ cars.
FWIW I've sold a few engines for a Porker specialist in the past on eBay via Paypal. I didn't have any issues at all and as said, I had less hassle than the UK buyers gave me.
