Hi there - quick question. I just installed a Bosch Blue coil on my MG Midget -am I correct that I need to bypass the ballast resistor as the Bosch coil has an internal resistor? It seems to run OK but want to make sure.
Thanks all

No ballast resistor required with a Bosch blue coil as far as I am aware đ

Hi there - quick question. I just installed a Bosch Blue coil on my MG Midget -am I correct that I need to bypass the ballast resistor as the Bosch coil has an internal resistor? It seems to run OK but want to make sure. Thanks all Many questions to ask here. -What year is your MG Midget? Early ones didn't have Ballasts, later ones did. I'll have to see which years had them. -Does it have a Ballast resistor from the factory? Some cars like the 'B and Stag had a ballast 'wire' in place of a physical resistor at the side of the coil. I think it was called something like Constantin. There are ways you can figure out what is needed though, with a voltmeter. If you have a ballast resistor it could cause issues with the new coil and potentially boil it. You need a Red Bosch or Beru coil. I do have a part no. for the former somewhere; my Stag had one fitted. That was a '74 with the resistive wire for the ballast resistor. blog.simonbbc.com/classic-car-projects-and-tips/ballast-resistor-coil-mgb/www.mgexp.com/phorum/read.php?3,3086811

If you have a ballast resistor it could cause issues with the new coil and potentially boil it. Can't see that happening.

Thanks thatâs what got me started on this Blue Coil thing in the first place and therefore ordering them to a hotel in the USA and then having to explain to American Airport Security what two blue âcanâshaped things were doing in my luggage. I have been running it and while only short trips to cruise nights it seems better Thanks though!
