Following in from my engine change questions,
I have sent documents away, with proof of engine and that it’s 1300cc So I should be able to buy 6 months tax for £85.25
But because they haven’t sent the paperwork back(still showing as 1600cc on dvla site as well) I’ll have to pay £140.25
If I get the mot tomorrow or Tuesday, I’d want to tax it straight away so we can go for a drive.... I’m guessing I have to pay £140 and then claim back for the extra paid?

Despite your eagerness to actually drive it, hang fire until the paperwork is completed. Worst case is you tax it on a Monday, they finally get round to your paperwork to change its class on Tuesday, kindly decide to cancel your (now incorrect) tax on Wednesday and send you a refund by post which you don’t receive for a fortnight - in the meantime you’re driving round in an illegal vehicle.
The law of Sod will apply - its DVLA..

What he said. Got caught out like that with declaring sorn too quickly after buying a car, change of keeper hadnt gone thru and when it did my sorn efforts were wiped and it was "untaxed" totally unknown to me for a couple of months.

Yeah I did that when I bought it, did the SORN and got an email confirming it, then once the logbook arrived I then got a reminder that I hadn’t SORNed it. Tried to do it and it wouldn’t work. I think I’ll man up and call them today, but suspect I’ll start a monthly DD for tax, then cancel after a month (hopefully) and retax when I get the logbook back..... it’ll only cost me £9 more that way but will be mostly legal, I’ve got proof of trying to change engine... so can’t see it being something they’d want to push if it is taxed, it’s only me losing out
