1938 Phantom 3 carb assembly this afternoon. Relatively straightforward but a few small hurdles to get over - First was setting the float height on a carb with no instructions about how or where to set the floats and the floats rammed to the bottom of the float chamber with next to no movement when taking the carb part. Had to use a bit of educated guess work on that score - At least everything has just been apart should the need arise to carry out further adjustment. Ready to go - already having installed the new enrichment pump. One little issue was the new casting preventing bolts from seating correctly Old casting is squared off at the web for clearance New one not so much So some careful filing was required to provide the necessary clearance And the top of the casting had the same issue and needed the same solution With those little tasks out of the way - not rushed bearing in mind the cost of that casting - it was on to buttoning it all back up. Once the main bolts for the two body halves where all nipped up it was just the linkages and plenty of split pins Just why? It does not take that much effort to cut a pin to size if you do not have one the right length. Mine where too long but simple enough to trim. Job done. Back to its owner on Monday with a list of instructions and I can get back to one or other of my projects.

Well the carb got slung on the Roller and it started and runs quite well. Happy enough with that outcome and it was an interesting task. Lovely old car that I will try and get a couple of shots of to complete the write up.
Today was spent doing a bit more work on Ictchy's G32 - Seats this time.
The original seats were utterly shot due to sitting in water for a good few years causing everything to rot, leather, steel, foam, fabric, all done for so there was nothing that could economically be done to repair them. Replacements were found in the shape of a pair of MGF seats that suit the car very well as they are black leather with blue Alcantara inserts. The downside is that they are a very tight fit in the G32 with the runners just squeezing into the seat pan and the seats being a bit wider than the runners. The seat pan is about 40mm deep at the sill and 125mm deep at the tunnel so on the first fit we raised the runners up so that they sat flush with the top of the pan at the sill and shifted the seat as close to the sill as possible to clear the side of the services tunnel. They looked fine and were okay to sit in, but for a sports car they failed to feel in any way sporty and secure. The issue was that to get them in and clear we had mounted the seats flat on the runners and the runners need to be at an angle to provide rake on the seat squab.
To give the seat the required angle the seat needs to drop at the back of the runner and rise as the front so we have a overall rake of around 3". To get to this number we dropped the rear 1-1/8" and raised the front 1-7/8". We are about 1/2 way through the job at the moment as we complete the design works and completed the majority of the fabrication of the front frames. My task tomorrow is to find some suitable plate for mounting feet and on Wednesday the Migmate will be dusted off again to complete the job. I will also remember to take some pictures ......
Test fit with the rake angle the seats look better by a mile and more importantly give a feeling of sitting in them rather than on them.

Wednesday meet was at the molebert hideout adding a couple more brackets for the diffuser rudder deflector. and to finish a weld I had missed. Missing weld not 100% required as the bracket was welded but I like to weld on both sides. - focus not wanting to play ball. And welding The brackets are for picking up a full length engine/gearbox protection plate - just the attachment points and the support framework off the rear cross member to design and build when the engine and box are in. Probably some G21M work on this thread soon - unless some more engine stuff turns up in the meantine.

Spent the morning working on the G21M to get it at a decent ride height in order for it to be rolling to make it's way up to Captain Itchy's for some glassfibre works to the floors and a few other places. First off I fitted some 140 x 7" springs that I bought ages ago as part of a job lot of parts - they are about 3" too short for the coilovers on the G21M but they were all I had - Even at 7" they still allowed for a bit of preload to be applied so I wound them up as far as I could. After fitting and lowering the car - I took some measurements - Fitted shocker length was 13 3/4" 2 1/4" of compression and the spring compressed length was 2.75" - 385lb - The chassis height and the wheel height in the wheelarch were also at a really good start point. I then thought I would do a quick experiment to try and find out what the original spring rates were so I removed the spring from the old shocker and fitted to the new and wound on a bit of preload. Installed in the car, adjusted to the same chassis height and did the sums = 120lb or as near makes no difference. Also with the shocks wound on a few clicks they were not too bad at all stiffness wise - as the leverage ratio is about the same as the live axle it's not a great surprise. I think when the car is complete with all the extra weight they will be a bit on the light side But as I have the poundage now I can throw it all in the calculator to get comparable rates for the IRS - I expect 140/150 lb will be enough.

On the G21 the 150lb springs arrived and were fitted - do the job pretty well but the proof will be when the car is completed and rolling - Rolling wise the new tyres have arrived but I am short of a tyre fitter. As the car will not be moving up to Itchy's place for works I may well just get stuck into some of the other jobs that will be needed. G15 wise there was a bit of a bargain to be had on ebay with a 7.25" Super Clutch I was hoping that there would be enough meat left on the ultra light flywheel to accomodate a 2.5mm cut that is required to fit this clutch but when I had it measured there is only 4.2mm left in the area I need to take 2.5mm from - two choices here - Choice A - I do have another flywheel I can get modified - or Choice B - I really really like choice B As Wednesday night club meets are cancelled until further notice there will not be much to report on any activities from that quarter so it's onwards and upwards in quiet isolation.

Revive this thread with a tribute track.
Ordered the flywheel today - and that's about it on my G15 front.

Flywheel arrived today - It was one of those parts deliveries where you pick up the box and wonder if all that's inside is the bill! It goes rather well with the clutch, it all "snaps" together. A very different looking item to the original Hillman Imp assembly. As we don't have a steel box with 4 peeps and luggage to take into consideration - Just a lighter than normal lightweight 2 seater coupe - This one is only for the race engine. Better get some good bolts on order.

With ordering up the Aluminium sheet and tubing for the Strato's and the Gemini I also ordered up some U section channel to see if I can fabricate some window frames for the G21.
The rear wheels will coming off tomorrow to get the scrap tyres changed over to something more suitable.

Looking forward to this next installment, i need to make window fames for my g15 I was involved with the stainless steel frames that John's mate down in Devon made a while back and thankfully I grabbed a couple of sets of those. The biggest pain with G15 frames is getting the stainless steel sheet folded to the right profile - if you can find a place to do the folding then the rest of it is reasonably straight forward. There a couple of places near me that may be able to do the folding - Shropshire Stainless Fabrications and Shropshire Stainless and Aluminium. The G21 has wind up and down windows so just a single channel which in some ways makes it easier. The G15 has two panes in runners which makes it quite thick but only a slim door top to mount it all on so using aluminium is not an easy option. With BOY I have been contemplating going to an alloy frame with a single fixed window fitted with a sliding aperture. Mike Just swapped from his old chrome frames on PHX to the Stainless ones.

Did a G15 swap over yesterday - delivering Captain Itchy's SLC and collecting BOY - This was supposed to happen in March and involve delivering the G21M and collecting BOY but we all know why that went pear shaped. The G21 is now going to be staying put with me for a bit as Itchy is contemplating what to do with his G32 which is currently in the garage. At least if we have our cars at our own places we can make further progress on them should the urge take us.
Good have the G15 Back with all the roof and back panel work completed.
My tame gearbox man has been going through his collection of boxes looking for a decent box to check over for Itchy's G15 - Box one looked pretty good but it was found to have all sorts of issues internally with reverse gear looking all sorts of sorry for itself and retaining rings moved into places where they really should not be. Second box out of the pile looked a bit grubby but a label on it "good std ratio". When he opened it up it all looked pretty reasonable but there was something wrong that he could not quite put his finger. One of those wood for the trees staring you in the face sort of things - 3rd and 4th were straight cut gears. Closer inspection and it looks like this one is a works close ratio box. That one will get rebuilt into a later casing and fitted with a tougher diff cross pin. After any worn parts are replaced it will probably make its way onto the back of the race engine.
The hunt for a good box for Captain Itchy continues with more boxes being hauled from the stash to be investigated.
No photo's of BOY for the moment as it was parked and covered in preparation for the rain that has duly arrived this morning.
Got a job on the list for PHX - to weld up a couple of heater inlet and outlet pipes - Which reminds me that I need to drop a mail to Itchy and H about 25mm alloy coolant tubing.

Text posts are so boring - let's have a few visuals That reverse gear and box - although at this res you can't see the issues with the cluster on the shaft. G15 (IMP) head getting the porting treatment - Running the seat cutter down the exhaust which provides a guide for how much is needing to come out of the port. Big bore manifold and "silencer" next to a Triumph 955i silencer that will be re-purposed.

Latest report from gearbox central is that a good box has been located from the pile for SLiC - So that will get some TLC in the next couple of weeks - Quite a bit of stuff is also going off for balancing. molebert Chesman 998 Crank/pulley/Lightweight Fly and STD IMP Clutch Cover - clutch surface will get a quick reface and then the whole assembly balanced. Itchy - Stock 875 Imp Sport - The fly is getting lightened balanced and converted to take a Nissan Micra cover which will be mounted and balanced My Lightweight road fly from my Chesman 998 is getting faced, balanced and converted for Nissan Micra and the cover mounted and balanced. More spending has also gone on as I have also ordered up a set of special head studs and some 1.32 inlet valves - Better think about getting a sump sorted out for my engine and speak with Mr Gearbox about where we got to with discussions about block strengthening kits! Would have been a lot cheaper and easier to have kept PHX.....

Just catching up on the last few posts looking good, and great find with the close ratio box! I've found lockdown's been a funny time to get car work done. So long as you have all the bits you need on site you can make great progress, but as soon as you need something ordered or done externally it slows down quite a bit! Unless it was always that pace externally, and you just had the lack of time to match it...

Lockdown has just been a big negative for me as I cannot go and work on my G27 or make progress with guys on the Ginetta projects during the weekly Wednesday get together. As work has continued as per normal for me I have not had any additional time available over and above normal weekends and taking holiday. Current project progress is really at a slower pace than usual as I am not a fan of being cooked whilst working and as you say if you need parts not everything is easy to get hold of - and the strange environment we find ourselves in leaves me in a less than motivated mood at times. That said - in between dealing with the garage flooding due to a massive storm today - I have started assembling all of the various boxes of parts that make up The G15 - molebert popped over to drop over a .360 lift cam carrier that he only collect from me last weekend! Together with a block strengthening plate that will go on his 998 build. Mr.Gearbox has been going through his treasure trove of Imp racing bits and found R21, R23, Fraser B, a Newman prototype as well as his special .410 lift and billet carrier - The decision has been made to drop the R21 in the molebert 998 and go for quite a racy build. All of the balancing work on all the flywheels cranks etc. has been completed and we even went as far as getting a spare flywheel lightened and balanced and modified for the Micra cover. Not many G15 photo's at the moment as the camera has been busy today snapping old bits of MK2 Escort removed from Gemini's to stick on eBay.
