Hi!
I'm looking for a garage to take me on as an apprentice, one day a week (boy's gotta make a living), happy to do it for free! I really want to learn about mechanical engineering and I reckon this is the best way. Proper enthusiastic, quick learner, hard working and I'm a pretty dab hand at an oil change!
Live in Leeds at the minute so sommat near-by would be decent! I feel like this is a long-shot but if you don't ask!

I have no idea how old you are but have you tried applying for apprenticeships, look here, www.gov.uk/topic/further-education-skills/apprenticeshipsand/or talk to your local college. Worth looking at larger organisations as they have money to spend (apprenticeship levy). Well done for going down the apprenticeship route, I coach apprentices (in IT and management).

Hi All,
Basically - I am not wanting to be a mechanic by trade...
I currently work in the NHS and am happy doing what I'm doing and as such I don't think a proper apprenticeship would work out for me (also I'm 24 with a Arts degree (lol)). Hence looking for something one day a week.
I'm in Burley Park but will be driving again soon!
I don't have any mechanical/engineering qualifications at all. I reckoned my enthusiasm and the fact I'm willing to do it for free would help combat that haha. I have some crappy spanners and that but not a lot!

Hence looking for something one day a week. That doesn't matter any more the rules have changed, I've got apprentices with masters and one who had a Phd with age ranges up to 53. Most of my apprentices are already employed and are over 30.

Hey MiataMark, how does that work if they're already employed... As in the hours they do for you as an apprentice i mean... Like weekends and stuff?
I'd like to do a garage/mechanics apprenticeship if that sort of thing is possible. I'd love to learn mire about cars like that if it was a place that did old cars.

OP , you might be better off finding some proper old fashioned garages if you can , perhaps those that deal with older cars but are not specifically classic car garages and offer your services . Perhaps on Saturdays etc .

It doesn't work if you are employed in one job and want to do an apprenticeship in another. You have to be employed full-time as part of the apprenticeship and then be able to do 20% of your time training (off-the-job), similar to the old day release but now it doesn't have to be so structured. To be honest for existing employees it wouldn't really work for something like mechanics it's more suited to IT, Management etc. Apprentices can now go up to Level 7, above masters, and there is no restriction on having a degree, as long as its not in an associated subject. There is also lots of stuff around funding that changes based on age etc. For employed apprentices it's normally organisations who are paying the Apprenticeship levy. Apprenticeships are a vast subject that I could bore for England* on, but not through a forum. *and they're different in Wales and Scotland.

Ahhh, right, gotcha. "Day release"... That's a phrase I haven't heard since the 80's!
I did a YTS scheme when I left school. Got placed in a draughting office four days a week with one day training at college. Good times. I kind of assumed those kinds of things don't exist anymore.

Okay - maybe I shouldn't have used the term "apprentice"... I'm not looking for anything proper, or that will give me a qualification: I'm wanting to learn, and nothing more. I just want some geezer to say: yeah come help out at my garage- I'll show you the ropes in exchange for helping out.

Have you an era or type/make/model in mind you would particularly like to work on. Or maybe you are planning to restore something from your youth in the future. The more information you give in that regard the better the help afforded here will be.

I, being a member here (and perusing the forums for ages before coming a member), obviously have an interest in older cars. I thought it best from me to just be open about what opportunities I might be offered and I'd take anything if it got me learning about mechanical engineering in general. I don't reckon asking a garage to "train" me to restore a 74 Capri specifically is gunna bode well in my favour!

Granted. But I bet someone near you would appreciate a helping hand for a few teachings. I suggest you ask a more specific question along the lines of "is there a car restorer who'd like a days help a week in exchange for passing on their wisdom..local to (insert your prefered readius here) Or even "who knows of a garage working on older cars in (your prefered area). Maybe if that fails you can seek out the local classic car club and they could help? Best of luck. Its a good idea.

This was definitely my thinking RE: work > teaching trade-off! I'll search for that type of garage locally and see what crops up. I reckon speaking to em directly, and in person might be a winning ticket.
As of right now this thread is to respond to the questions: "is there a car restorer who'd like a days help a week in exchange for passing on their wisdom..local to Leeds/West Yorkshire" and "who knows of a garage working on older cars in Leeds/West Yorkshire".
Thanks! :-)

I think you might run into issues re insurance and liability, if you do some work for a garage are you/they insured, what about if you cause an accident or damage something, or if somebody crashes after you've worked on their car are you liable. I'd be very careful before doing any work.
