Always wanted a ride on mower, haven’t got a lawn that warrants one, I can’t eve get it on the lawn without difficulty, although the grass lane behind my house needs cutting every few weeks in the summer so that good enough excuse to buy one.. Rear tyres are a bit perished and won’t hold air, I’ll probably just put some inner tubes in, the fuel tank is missing but that’s easy to sort, there’s no grass box but I don’t need that, and the cutting deck isn’t attached and not in great shape. Had a go today to start it, the starter solenoid is broken, after I I hot wired it, it started and did run, not great but 10 years without being used can’t help matters, I don’t know if there is much interest on here with mowers but I’m looking for help off people who have similar stuff. Anyone know what this leaver does? And what plugs in here? When I did get it running, I tried it in gear and it didn’t move. All the belts look in place and things were spinning underneath, anything obvious to look for? Eventually will strip it back, and get it a re paint and generally a bit of a project in the summer. Cheers Paul

I have one of these, albeit a slightly newer version. I had the same problem last week. Make sure the front pulley which has the 2 drive belts is free. It is like a CVT drive. The centre separating the 2 belts needs to move up and down freely as this is what gives you the gear ratios.
Between this pulley and the rear drive pulley under the seats a tension pulley that acts on the rear drive belt. It is tensioned with a spring. Mine was there but would not tension the belt as the rust had extended the spring when untensioned by 1 inch. They are about £15 all in at your local garden machinery shop.
Buy a full set of belts too. You can get the 3 belts on eBay for around £50 but are this price for 1 from MTD.
I changed my belts and the spring and all worked fine after.

My brother and I rescued a scrapped one of similar vintage. I think the lever is used to lift the cutting blade(s) up and down. I suspect the connector is for remote charging of the battery.
Ours is in similar condition to yours - engine runs good, but it won't drive, and the electrical system is in a poor state.
One problem with ours is one of the back wheels is jammed on to the axle, a common problem with these, ideally requiring special pullers, lots of heat and bashing with hammers, etc., albeit being careful not to damage the driveshaft/diff.

Nice one I’ll have to see what it’s like underneath, then I’ll start getting new belts etc, steering is sloppy, not sure if there are bushes and things to replace. Found a video on YouTube, that leaver is forward reverse and neutral, hopefully it was in neutral earlier when I tried to move, I’m missing the cover that goes over the lever.

If you hadn't put it in gear that could explain a lot😄. Could be an even cheaper fix than the spring

I’m going to buy another one to make one good one I think. Two rear tyres are about £50 so make sense to get another one with better tyres if I can.

I've got 2 as I snapped the axle on the first and you've always got to have a spares car, I mean mower 😄. I've also disconnected all the inhibitors that stop the engine when you do something that you shouldn't

Got it going today, had to clean the carb out a bit first couldn’t get any fuel through.
Once I got it running, it ran pretty well, few splutters but I bet it could do with a good service.
It’s drives fine, quite nippy in 5th, all gears work, brakes work, no horrible noises,
Will find a parts mower and get all the good bits together, was thinking to replace things like the bulbs with LED but they probably wouldn’t like when they dim down etc when the engine slows.
There’s no rust on it so it should come apart easy and then I can decide on a colour scheme.

Would that dimming indicate a generator?? Maybe fitting a small alternator would fix it? Look at Lawnmower Racing sites for lots of info.

Great stuff, I'm in a similar position to you, the garden doesn't justify it but the back alleyway more than justifies it!! Shame they are all mega money down here

Would that dimming indicate a generator?? Maybe fitting a small alternator would fix it? Look at Lawnmower Racing sites for lots of info. I think it didn’t help the engine wasn’t running well so once I get the engine running better it will be better, and I might change the lights to run direct off the battery inside of the engine. Great stuff, I'm in a similar position to you, the garden doesn't justify it but the back alleyway more than justifies it!! Shame they are all mega money down here Plenty on eBay for £100. Worth getting on to tinker with. Had a bit of time painting a few bits today. Also used some white spirit and the jet wash to get a lot of oil and grime off it. Painted the engine black, painted some of the tin work. I had a piece of acrylic to make the cover to go over the gear lever but it cracked, don’t want to buy another sheet for £15 so need to find something cheaper. Chassis in good shape. No real rust. Starter motor not looking too good. Cheers.

Starter motor not looking too good. I wonder can you flip that gear?? Just checked online. It’s can only go one way Has that got an aluminium flywheel and starter gear? Not sure. I think it’s a plastic cog. Cheers. Found a new cog for like £4 on its own. Will try it and if it’s good. I’ll get an extra one in like you say. Need to decide on a colour. Easiest to keep red though, but might do bonnet and wheel arches silver.

Working nights atm, so got fair bit of free time in the days, everything I’ve ordered hasn’t arrived because of the bank holiday so running out of bits. I did sand and then stone chip the under side of the wheel arches and foot boards. Will wet and dry the tops tomorrow then prime and paint and clear VW Mars red for the chassis and front end. Ford moondust silver for the bonnet, wheel arches, wheels and foot boards Hopefully have a donor mower in the next couple of days to get the bits I need swap bits that are better than mine, then I’ll sell that mower back on.

Donor mower. Has all The missing bits i need and I can sell it back on or strip it for spares if needed. It drives fine but a bit rough in places. Should have this little project finished in the next few weeks. This second mower will be back on eBay. Mostly complete for someone else to restore or have some fun with.

Wheels were pretty rusty so sanded them and use some rust remedy, dunno if that stuff works but thought I’d use it. Only painted with silver hammerite. But massive difference. And some red bullet valve caps. Only £1 for them and they look alright I think. Ordered some inner tubes for the rear tyres. Had to break the bead of the tyre so ended up driving over the tyre in my pick up truck. I’ve got everything now. Just need I start painting the body work and start fitting it all back together.
