I was arguing with my thirteen year old know-it-all earlier about how her generation of car fans will think that People Carriers are cool! She said that no way would they ever be cool. But my argument was that by and large the cars that I think are cool now, are cool because when I was a kid my Dad drove them. This is also true of pretty much all of my car friends, and so going on that, by the time she and her friends are retro car fans, the cars that they want will be people carriers, because thats what most of their parents drive. Having said all that I am not a fan of this body style. There are a few I'd like, mk1 Renault Espace, Pontiac Tran-sport, Renault Avantime, and possibly a few others that I've not yet seen, or even thought about. But to date I have only had one people carrier, and for me, it was probably the most stylish... The Fiat Multipla! It's an eye of the beer holder thing! So then, people carriers... Let's see them!

I drove a Nissan Prairie in the mid 1980's as a works runaround. It was hammered and abused by multiple drivers but was always ultra-reliable, frugal and never put a foot wrong. Also very capable spacewise. The downside was that it wasn't much of a looker.

That is really beautiful. One that you restored? Yes - absolutely rotten when it arrived after 40 years storage in a roofless barn But pleased with how it came together - now back with it's owner and will be at our national rally in Harrogate this weekend

I grew up with Peugeot 505 estates and then an Quadra Espace MK1 facelift. A phase one pre facelift is on my radar now with a mechanical pumped VAG 1.9Tdi engine and 6 speed box.

Wasn't this the model that had no 'B' pillar ? Yes Very cool! Let's not forget, if we're looking for cool, that the perennially trendy VW camper came as a microbus from the factory - 7,8 or 9 seats... Mine's an 8 seater...

There was some criticism of the s1 design inasmuch as some owners had reported flexing of the monocoque under extreme conditions. I had never noticed anything untoward in the example that I drove, (which often operated at high speed whilst heavily laden).

I always thought that the second series Prairie looked rather smart:

I wanted something with 7 seats to go on holiday. I looked at all sorts and at one point even thought a Bedford Rascal bus thing might be fun. In the end I bought the cheapest nastiest Zafira and spent agaes making it useable again ! It's been a useful old heap really and one of the GSI versions ought to be slightly more interesting to drive. I started looking at interesting imports and other japanese stuff like the Nissans but most were way out of my price range ! Tried to find a modified Zafira and spotted this. I've got a broken spring on the front of mine, perhaps I should cut a couple more off !

Sorry no pics, I had (or SWMBO had to be more precise),A 95 Mitsubishi Space Runner, a rare UK car with only one rear side door, a slider on the N/S. Utterly reliable, I sold it in 2012 to make way for a much newer Xsara Picasso cos I came into a few bob, but it's still running around in my village today.
I'm coming to have a grudging respect for the Picasso, sure it's no racing car and there are a couple of flaws, like the front 1/4 vision is AWFUL. But it does what it says on the tin, it transports 5 people, reliably and in comfort and is wonderfully cheap and easy to maintain. Especially when you consider it's French! My own 2 litre petrol auto is thirsty and expensive on VED but diesels are better in both respects, you just can't get the Xsara Picasso diesel with the autobox SWMBO (who is disabled) needs! My only other complaint is not really the car's fault at all, but how it is percieved, insofar as other road users consistently underestimate how fast I am approaching and pull out on me!
On the Nissan Prairie, those missing B posts give the Prairie the dubious distinction of being the only car that can fail an MOT on rust in the doors, because the seat belts are built into them. The Diesel Prairie was, in it's day, the second slowest car you could buy (after the Mahindra Jeep)

C'mon, get out there tomorrow with your camera and take a few pics of your Xsara Picasso, it deserves to be shared with the world!
