I'm hoping some one here can shed some light on the possibilities and hopefully how-to of changing from the Volvo's original 5x108 to a 4x114.3 PCD. I don't like to use adaptors also since the axle is the ideal width as standard for my project. The main reason for me wanting to go with a 240 axle is the strength, availability (cost) and the width being spot-on. I need a significantly stronger rear axle and I know there are a couple of 4x114.3 around that are stronger but those are hard to come by and also much wider. And I don't think I want to know how much narrowing one of those would cost. On top of the original cost. I have found an example of it done. But no mention of how exactly this was done. But perhaps some will be able to see what's what.

Easiest option i see is to get a brake disc with the right pcd you want. Then enlarge the centerhole to the right volvo size so it's a good fit on the axle.
Then you can try to turn it so your four holes fit in between the five existing ones. If that works out you can center the new holes, drill and thread them.
If not possible without hitting one of the existing holes you're in for some more work... Welding up the existing holes and putting the flanges in the lathe to get them nice and flat again. After that you can put in any pcd you want.

Jeep Cherokee XJ rear axle too far out of the width you want? Nearly Right PCD, and available with an LSD if that floats your boat.
ETA: nearly right PCD. Read as 5X4.5", sorry!

You may have to weld up one of the original stud holes. Going from 4-5 stud or vise versa tends to be close. Otherwise can't see much issue.

Get a scimitar axle instead. Same width, correct PCD you want, equally as strong. (Volvo rear axles aren't as tough as people think as stock) Easy lsd or locker upgrades using jag parts.

Thanks guys. Wasn't sure it was 'OK' to redrill after welding up the existing holes since one or two would be overlapping with the 5x108 -> 4x114.3 Get a scimitar axle instead. Same width, correct PCD you want, equally as strong. (Volvo rear axles aren't as tough as people think as stock) Easy lsd or locker upgrades using jag parts. Now that's giving me a nice option, thanks! Are there significant differences between the different models? I found the SE6s to have a wider axle for example. The 51" of the SE5 would be very good indeed.

A Volvo 240 axle is 55.5". From memory I think a se5 one is 54" and a se6 56", but I'd have to check that.

My Scimitar 'knowledge' came from a 2 minute google search so might not be bulletproof. Either way the se5 would be the one to go for. Be it 54" or something close to it.
If anyone has one lying around or knows where to find one I'd be much obliged.

There's an se6 one on eBay at the mo, he lists it as being 144cm wide which is 56.6".
Se5 ones can be a little harder to find, just got to watch eBay and the hot rod forums/groups.

I had seen the one currently on eBay, thank you. I will keep my eye out for an se5 axle. There isn't a particular rush. So I assume one will show up one way or another.

Have you gave up on the redrill volvo one then?? I need axle to withstand 600bhp and not sure if an uprated 240 axle will handle it
