I have a bit of a dilemma. Currently, the tyres on the Benz rub on full lock. They catch on the inner wings as well as the arches so it isn't just a case of rolling the arches unfortunately.
It currently has 185/80 R14s. I could go for 175/80 R14 to try to clear the arches, but the profile means that it will lower the car by 16mm. And I only have around 25mm of ground clearance!
So... I'd be happy to live with the rubbing, but will the MOT man see it that way?! Can anyone think of any other options? (No, I'm not raising the suspension... that would just be silly!) Do they make 90 profile tyres?! ;D

Could you batter the inner arch with a big hammer to gain a little clearence?
Would spacing the wheels out a little just cause more problems somewhere else?

Yeah it'll catch more on the arches if I space out the wheels . I could try rolling the arches more, but they're already pretty tucked under. Maybe I could use lower profile tyres for the MOT and get it down there with only 10mm ground clearance... might not get onto the ramps though! ;D I could "adjust" the inner wings, they don't rub much there. Or perhaps lots of negative camber although I think to get enough I'd need serious surgery. I was talking to Bodieanddoyle at RR07 and he reckons there's an adjustment you can make to limit the rack turning. I might have to investigate this further.

Good thinking. That's a cheap and easy method!

sorry to pee on your chips, but it aint got a rack, its a box, and it doesn't have adjustable stops either. Knackers. Never looked at it that closely. In that case I'll have to look at where exactly it rubs and cut / shape / grind accordingly. I like the tall profile tyres cos it keeps the ride civilised.

I'd go with Boring! and have a spare set of narrower tyres for the test too. Rubbing tyres is a fail. Been there....

Rubbing tyres probably should be a fail, but my car just passed with such a condition. ;D
It's clearly visible aswell, because there is no paint on the inner arch where the tyres rub.
And no, i don't know the MOT tester, so i suppose it depends where you take it??

My clio passed with rubbing arches, but the tester said as it was just the underseal that was gone and not down to bare metal it wasnt a problem.

My Volvo rubs on full lock, and I have a sneaky suspicion that it always has. It's not lowered, the tyres are a factory size and it passes MOTs.

if there are witness marks on the tyre its supposed to be a fail.
I've had cars pass MOTs with all maner of defects in the past. In fact I complained to VOSA about one test they'd missed so much stuff. Not at my usual test centre of course.
Dave's an MOT tester by trade an 'all so I'd take his word on whats what...

It should fail but you may be able to sneak it through under the radar, how about running the mig down the lock stops a weld bead down each side will work wonders.
