My brothers focus broke down a couple of days ago, he was driving and battery light came on, he carried on, then the dials started bouncing, more das lights came on and the steering went, he pulled over and the car conked. When he told me I thought aux belt, he walked to a garage they thought the same, the belt is still there and no pulleys are loose, he was recovered. I went over the other day with a meter, jumped it with my car, engine started fine, with the engine running 12v, demist, hazards and high beam, down to 8v, so I’m guessing alternator. He drives over to Halifax and buys one that the seller has advertised as working, pita to do but it’s in. Jump leads from my car, fast clicking from the starter, tried a few times, few whacks with a piece of wood, nothing, just clicks. I triple checked everything I had done with the alternator and all was well, removed the starter and cleaned all connectors and earths, still just clicking
Where do I look now, new starter ??
I’m figuring if the alternator I fitted was duff it would still start with a jump from my car, so suddenly the starter is kaput

Hi, Try charging the battery first. If it's so flat when you jump yours onto it, it's trying to charge his battery and start it and it's too much for it and the starter just throws in and out of engagement. Depending on whether it charges or not a new battery may be on the cards.

It’ll be the rectifier on the alternator I think. It’s cheaper to replace that, but easier to just replace the whole thing with a second hand one. I fitted a supposedly ‘good’ used alternator this morning, it’s now the starter is just clicking.

What if you disconnect the battery and then jump it straight on the starter? See if it cranks over okay.

The gauge cluster is prone to failing on the early Foci with similar symptoms...

I had never heard of it, what a bloody palaver 😤 Read some more, I’m thinking brothers is not smart, his has a 3 pin plug and an earth, what I am reading is the smart has earth/3 pin and a slightly thicker power wire as well.

With a charged battery the car starts, that’s the good news......
Now it has no power steering, apparently it’s common on these, pumps, pipes and connections, it’s a good job it was cheap, I shall be back under it in the morning 😄

This happened twice on our old Mk1. Apparently it's very common - when the garage tried to get the part from foci at the breakers they were all missing the part. Second time I bought a genuine one from Ford and did it myself though it was £45 for the genuine part 😢 Just a suggestion though they do look a bit cheaper now if not genuine. www.ebay.co.uk/p/Willkey-Power-Steering-Pump-Pressure-Switch-Sensor-for-Ford-Focus-C-max-Mk1-Mk2/2117077085

He MUST NOT KNOW I just put a fuse back in the RIGHT place that I had checked yesterday. 😁
