Fitting a new clutch to a SD1 V8 with LT77 box with a new self centering release bearing , new fork, new pivot bolt and new slipper pads. The self centering bearing has wider slots in the plastic carrier than the old early steel one, but the slipper pads only come in one size so fitted it all together.
I was expecting a more precision fit but there's lots of play between the carrier and slipper pads, so it all seems a bit loose. Is this normal with the self centering type of bearing on a RV8 as I have never fitted one before.

Hi, the self centring release bearing has to go with the correct pressure plate. Can’t mix and match. Not sure if the fork tabs are different sizes between self centring and not. Thought they were all the same. There should be no slop. The little pads can be turned through 90 degrees. They are not actually square so maybe try that.

Thanks for the reply. Old clutch had flat fingers with early type round bearing and new clutch is curved fingers with flat bearing so that is right. Only one fork available for Sd1 and one size slipper pads. Old and new slipper pads are both 0.430 thou x 0.498 thou
old metal bearing carrier slot = 0.439 so 0.009 thou clearance for pads.
New plastic carrier slot = 0.467 thou so 0.037 thou clearance with the pad going in the same way. If I turn the pad 90 degree its too wide to fit the slot.
Could the extra clearance be to allow for expansion of the plastic carrier when it get hot so it wont bind ?

Hmmm don’t know. It’s possible I guess. I’m gonna go up the garage and have a play with some of my old parts. Who made your release bearing? Have you got a photo?

I had a look at your resto thread. I bought the new bearing from Rimmers part no. GRB 90247 to match the new clutch I already had when I found out it as had curved fingers.
So it's the same as the one you did not use with 3822 D1057 on the bearing edge.
Just rechecked the sizes with my cheap digital vernier and getting some change from yesterday but the new plastic carrier slot is still 0.030 thou wider than the old steel one. .

Ok just been up the garage. I have 2 self centring release bearings. One is the one I didn’t use, the other is a used Borg and beck, same as I fitted. The groves in the side are close to the same but the new/Rimmer’s one is slightly more generous. Weirdly I had two clutch forks. Both supposedly Sd1 but slightly different. One had ‘straight’ sides, the other has a ‘scallop’ in it if that makes sense. I fitted the scalloped one which I’m pretty sure came from a v8 with self centring clutch. The other one I think is early Sd1. Anyway, the little pivoting lugs fit fairly snugly in the release beatjn bug sloppier in the Rimmer’s one. What’s odd though is the studs that they engage over are too close together so it isn’t actually possible to get the release bearing in between? Will post photos tomorrow of if you message me your email or mobile number I can send them that way.

Thanks for taking the time to look. My old fork was the original 1981 which has straight sides and the new one from Rimmers LBU 1234 has the scollops in and a plate welded on top of the pivot bolt recess where they are prone to crack. It's the 2WD fork for SD1 V8 / TR8 AND tvr'S with ROVER v8'S . Landrover 4x4 use a different fork and bearing on the LT77 for the bigger 10 1/2" clutch. I measured the gap between the forks which was the same on both, so the only difference seems to be the wider slot on the plastic bearing carrier that rimmers sell which is .030 thou wider and makes it a loose fit. .

Right I think that must just be down to poor quality. I didn’t like that release bearing, if you push the front face it only shifts in two directions because if is retained by the two clips. The Borg and beck can slide in all directions.

When I did a search for a self centering bearing for the Rover V8 2WD cars this is the one everyone sells so guess it's the only one you can buy now. So could be just another modern poor quality replacement part you have to buy. I will have to phone Rimmers and see what they say about the slot size and if anyone else has asked. .

Thanks for the photo's. Looks like all the new one's have more clearance and it's the only one you can buy from various parts shops. I need to get the engine back in the car so will have to use it and hope there is a reason for the extra clearance on this one. Thanks again for your help and well done on a great restoration of your Police SD1. .
