My step daughter has just passed her driving test. But her provisional policy is with Direct Line, now they are refusing to insure her, because there are 6 cars at the house. 3 x moderns An almost dead MX5 My Morris Oxford garage project My Dailmer It seems they have a limit of 5 cars at the house, But she is only allowed to drive hers. The Daimler is often is storage away from the house, and I think that is what is pushed over the edge. Does anyone know what the requirement are for insurance companies ? Is it usable cars ? Is it cars registered to an address ? This missus is in tears because her daughter can't drive her car

They probably poke around on google earth to see if its possible!

Insure with someone else, I think we've got 15 or so cars at the moment, no one's ever told us we have too many to insure.

Thats got to be the most dumarse insurance related thing ive heared in a while. How can having X amount of cars on your property have any affect on anyones driving? Even IF she was aloud to drive one of the other cars, its not like anyone can drive 2, or even 5 cars at the same time. Sorry if I'm not making any sense, I cant make sense of it.
Ive never heared of anything like this before, go with someone else.

I've never been asked how many vehicles I have when arranging insurance. Why should it even matter? Don't they want your money?

Have they refused to insure her? This could be an issue when you get insurance as they ask if you have ever been refused insurance.

Not the same thing - it's normally if they cancel a policy due to non-disclosure. This is just a no quote. Most mainline insurance companies have their own criteria and are not set up to cater for anything unusual - it sounds like you need to either use a broker or a specialist company to get what you need.

Hi, brachunky has a point, are you declaring that all vehicle are parked off the road? The fact that they know the number of vehicles at the address means that they have done checks.
I can remember a case some years ago someone claimed on a stolen trailer tent, The ins co google'd the address and found that there was no off street parking that they declared it was stored on. It turned out the trailer tent was parked on the hard standing in front of a block of garages up the road, they refused the claim.
At least this way you now know that the ins co may be difficult to deal with in the event of a claim. They could have said nothing taken the premium and refused a claim on the grounds of false declaration or other excuse.

It is bizarre. We've got driveway space for 4, with another in the garage. The daily drivers aren't declared as driveway residents - so it isn't that. I got some quotes last night for my daily driver, as all its details were on MoneySupermarket. The cheapest 6 or so companies were identical in price for 4 cars in the house or 6+ in the house - as we'd al l expect. So it must be some weird algorithm that Direct Line have, which is a shame as they were £400 cheaper than their competitors. Nett result - Direct Line have lost business and I'm in the dog house

If a car is off the road and not insured i wouldn't bother declaring it as a car at the residence, but being insurance companies they make the rules to suit themselves so who knows what they are actually referring to.

Dad and I had 19 cars between us when i still lived at home, all kept at the same address and all insured so hard to see why 5 is an issue. As already said, try a different insurer. Or more likely tell Direct Line you are going elsewhere and watch them backtrack faster than a Tory MP

Yet another example which demonstrates if insurance is to be compulsory, then the insurance companies should be more heavily regulated or even state owned. None of this writing T&C's to suit them all the time as effectively it is all a licence to print money.

Hi, The legal minimum insurance is third party cover, everything else like fire, theft, comprehensive, courtesy car is all extra and it's those benefits that charged for and are subject to T&C's and the underwriters whims.
