It was time for a new car, which to me means idly browsing eBay and various classifieds looking for something to catch my eye. With no real criteria I fancied something a bit different. I usually stick to euro stuff, but twhen I saw this I knew it was time to try something a little further from home. I didn't know much about these early Probes other than I'd seen images of them online occassionally, but I could see it had pop-up headlights and a spectacularly red interior so it was pretty much a done deal. This one came from the US back in '89 and sent a few years on the road before ending up in storage for about 20. It made its return to the roads last year and now it's mine. It's a Mazda MX-6 underneath (no, not the pretty one that the later Probe was based on), this one: this is a GT model which means It's got a 2.2 12V 4 pot (Mazda F2T) with an intercooled turbo putting out a storming 145bhp and a strong 190lbft, there's electronically adjustable dampers and features such as cruise control (that doesn't work) and air conditioning (that also doesn't work) Oddly it still features windy windows and no central locking. The colour combination has been dubbed "champagne and strawberries" by one friend and awful by many, but I love it. My plans are wheels, suspension and maybe some engine mods, but we'll see. Here's a couple of modified examples:

Much as i love 3 spokes and I clearly love 3 spokes It needs something meatier. There was a lovely set of Advan Super 16s on ebay, but a bit rich for me sadly.

Get yourself onto www.ukpoc.co.uk - there are a couple of chaps with Gen 1 probes on there. Yeh, that'd be good. I've tried a couple of times, once the Captcha was out of date and now I just get sent to an error page after trying to register though. Will send an email to see if I can sort it out.

The forum has just been upgraded to some better software at the weekend so hopefully it will be sorted.

It looks a bit like a Sierra and ST165 morphed with a squint.
Cool car, bet the engine can take some more boost too...

As for more boost, that'd be good, but not sure how much more the tiny little turbo has to give! First addition is an alu gear knob bought for £6.48 on ebay. It's much nice to use than the old one and adds a bit of (much needed) extra red. Which brings me onto a question. What does this lever do? It can either be down or locked up (release with little tab), but it doesn't seem to do anything. You can squeeze the lower part in the up position but nothing seems to happen. I've got no manual and there isn't one on the passenger side so I'm a bit lost.

Is that a manual pump handle for an inflatable lumbar or bolster support? With a compromised valve it would seem to do nothing. It's not shown here, but there could be any number of reasons why.

3rd-gen RX-7 standard wheels on that one. Because they're an MX-6 in a fat suit they have the same stud pattern as all kinds of righteous JDMy0 schmutter The Rascal King might be on to something... my later-model 24v Probe had inflatable bladders in the side bolsters that were pumped up by a lever thing on the seat. They gradually deflated over the course of a journey Which at least made it easier to get out when you arrived

I forgot about the earlier probes....nice example...looks really clean.
if its all there, you can certainly spend time considering optional appearance upgrades...

Thanks guys, it does seem to be a bolster adjuster thing, but it doesn't seem to work. Oh well, the seats are good actually with lumbar adjust whoch does work.
UI could be tempted by some FD wheels if a set come up, but perhaps not angular enough for the body. Keeping an eye on eBay for nice 5x114.3 wheels at a good price if anyone spots anything.
It's a very clean car in general, no body rust at all. It was in storage for approximately 20 years and only put back on the road last year.
It does need a new fan belt and the cambelt is way overdue on age so they will be getting done soon, but at least it's non interference.

from the front it looks like the love child of an M100 elan and mk1 MR2, from the side its 300ZX of Z31/Z32 mishmashery.
i actually like it, been won over by all the little details and NADA trying to do JDM post ironic kind of flavour !

So new wheel time But first I need to A) remoeve the old one and B) Find out what kind of boss I need Do I need to remove anything else in these photo or just utilise a bit of mallet time? And it was held on by a 21mm nut and looks like the above, do I want some kind of Mazda adapter or something Ford? And are the cheap ebay ones any good? Apologies for my lack of knowledge, I've always gone OEM with steering wheel swaps before and I'm hyper aware that anything I break will be very difficult to replace!

I think you can use an inexpensive steering wheel puller.....which has 2 bolts that screw into those holes in the wheel while the center posts pushes against the steering shaft. some penetrating fluid, good tension on the puller, and some taps with a hammer on the puller should shake it loose....
PS...if the holes do not have threads, then they make pullers with arms that hook to the back of the wheel....

On a few cars I don't know why but having the key in the ignition helps. Put the nut back on a few threads & spray a bit of wd40 round the thread.pull it side to side while pulling towards you.

Apologies for my lack of knowledge, I've always gone OEM with steering wheel swaps before and I'm hyper aware that anything I break will be very difficult to replace! DO NOT HIT IT WITH A MALLET The steering column likely includes a pre-weakened shear-point.... Mazda had a habit of using nylon pegs holding together two separate tubes in the column. They are designed to break in a crash and thus collapse the column rather than impale you like a hunting trophy. If you take a mallet to the steering wheel you're likely to knacker them so your column will telescope in when you want it to the least! Leave the nut on a few turns so when the wheel pops off it doesn't rearrange your good looks... hold the wheel at a quarter-to-three position and sort of "walk" the rim in a circular motion forward and backwards with your hands while pulling towards yourself (easier to do than it is to describe ). It'll come off without the need for mad violence

Everything about that is cool. The champagne and strawberries, exterior/interior is amazing! Regarding the steering wheel luckyseven 's advice is spot on. Make sure you put the nut on... I've had a steering wheel in the face once when I was in a rush lol.
