I fancy a set of those axle stands which lock as you lift them removing the need for a second hand I typed into ebay and these come straight up www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NEW-Heavy-Duty-3-Ton-Axle-Stands-Van-Caravan-Stand-Lift-Racks-Black-Red-Pair/172668421319?hash=item2833d704c7:g:~kMAAOSwjqVZEs0jUnbelievably cheap i think. I go to click buy it now but notice the seller has less than perfect feedback. In the one of the negatives someone wrote about these stands "DANGEROUS, DO NOT BUY IF U WANT TO LIVE!!". Now they have sold hundreds of them and the first page of ebay appears to be covered in them But i want to live So, what would you do? These stands start off at around £16 and go gradually up in price. At what point do you know you are getting a good set but aren't paying more than you need to?

Tbh they're gunna be the same thing made in the same Far East factory by the same people as a lot if other more expensive items, probably just with a second rate finish. But does that really matter after a few weeks kicking them round the garage?
Tbh if you're worried about safety buy some traditional axle stands with the pin. No question of if the ratchet is engaged properly on those, unlike these ones. I've never thought this type are the greatest idea to be honest.

Interestingly the halfords ones weigh 1.5 kg more that the ones on ebay
I never occured to me the risk was with the ratchet slipping
I would like to ask the person who left the back feedback why but their name isn't visible

I assume that's what the problem was, I've seen them skip/drop as a vehicle is lowered into them a bit quickly if the ratchet isn't seated. Other than that they're fairly robust unless there's a manufacturing fault or something.

I imagine the ebay ones are safe enough but i wonder if the Clarke ones feel a little better built or sturdier
Less 'wobble' in your axle stands is a good thing
Right now i'm wondering whether i blow £15 on the Clarke ones because i 'know' they're good or risk always thinking the cheap ones are a bit rubbish if i bought them

SGS have a good reputation and aren't expensive. www.sgs-engineering.com/garage-equipment/axle-standsPersonally I wouldn't want any cheap cast parts on any axle stands I was using, id prefer fabricated construction. But a pair of proper heavy duty fabricated construction axle stands are £75+ these days! Personally I'd go for the SGS 6 ton fabricated steel ones. £26+ Delivery and lifetime warranty isn't too bad.
