'Evening all, the time (and weather) has finally come around for me to paint my kit car, and I'm hoping that some people with a bit more knowledge than me can have a quick look over my plans and provide some guidance\advice. First off - a picture of my car before I finished the bodywork and stripped it down (I've not got more current pictures I'm afraid!). It's currently filled, sanded and will be wiped off with tack cloths immediately before painting. Environment: I'll be doing this in my garage with plastic curtains attached to the rather low roof beams, they will probably not quite reach the floor. Will sweep, vac and damp down the floors before spraying. Equipment: I've got a 150l, 3hp compressor I'm going to use with a moisture trap and filter. I was toying with the idea of making some extra runs of copper piping to act as a cooler as well, but I'm not sure it's worth the time and effort? Spray gun wise a friend's said they'd lend me some devilbiss guns, but since I don't know if that will come through or what state they are in I'm thinking of grabbing this ebay set as a backup. Paint: I'd like to get a matte or satin finish on this, and since I don't want to mess around with 2k paints (I've had enough breathing problems in my life) it'll be 1k & cellulose. Here's the ones I've got lined up: 1k high build primerMatte Green (Celly)Matte Black (Celly)Clear Cpat(1k) - do I need this? And a maskPlus 5L of celly thinners. Any advice or guidance would be very much appreciated as I've not done a job like this before. There is, of course, Plan B but I'd like to try my hand at "proper" painting if possible.

Sounds silly but if you are doing a Matt/satin finish have you thought about graffiti paint? Very little VOC/thinners going airborne to worry about, huge range of colour, easy to apply. You've done all the prep so it will still come out lovely. Totally understand if that is out of the question but I always painted my trucks with it and I got a great finish with barely any prep work so with a decent base it should look awesome. But I can also see the appeal of using the gun obviously. Just my idle musings on it

To be fair the thought had crossed my mind - may work out cheaper too! I've been thinking along the lines of Montana Black, which people on here have talked about. My main worry is how long it would last compared to a celly paint job... plus I kinda like learning new skills and getting new tools . Although it would get it out of the way quicker, which means I can drive it and get on with the Dolly quicker... kinda torn!

Another vote for Montana. Both black and gold are good, but i think black is better for some reason, but can’t remember why. I have painted cars in both, one lasted amazing

If you're going for a matt/satin finish you won't need the clear coat. I wouldn't bother with the copper piping either if you're only really doing the one job. Guns? Devilbiss are great guns but again, just for one job, pretty much any half decent gun will be fine as long as you can adjust the fan and the pressure. Just try a couple of test panels to get the feel of it. I prefer gravity fed but a suction fed will do the job just as well.

Although it would get it out of the way quicker, which means I can drive it and get on with the Dolly quicker... kinda torn! It is tough paint. Really bright colours do fade a little but otherwise it's very stable, Excellent adhesion, and is very hard wearing. I used it on off-roaders, never really had any issues with damage except when it got driven into walls and such and then it's just a case of repair and blend and all is good. The black range is nitro combination and as far as I can work out that is just basically old fashioned car paint anyway. Buy a can and have a play, see how you feel about it. It's not like using 'normal' paint aerosols, you are meant build up enough paint in one pass to fully cover the base coat, without sags. If you paint it in thin coats I find it gets a 'dusty' final finish. Thick and fast and it looks great and has a nice Matt finish. That said if you get imperfections in it, just move on, I've found 9 times out of 10 with Montana if you get a little sag or something by the time it dries it's just disappeared anyway. It's VERY forgiving. My dads Relay camper is going to get a 70's vannin' paint job soon and Montana is the paint of choice..

Is it possible to achieve a gloss or maybe a satin finish with Montana paints? Are they all matt finish?
Sorry for wandering a little off topic.

A mate of mine did a roller paint job on his mini, but I don’t know the name of the paint. It looked a bit orange peeley last year but another round of cutting back and it looks great!

That's come out well. Glad you are getting on with it ok and are happy with it. As a satin/Matt paint I love it, it's a fantastic system that works so well.
