	Hi, I have been given a black Mk4 Escort estate 5 door, will get some pics up soon. Completely standard. 3 Speed auto 1.6 GL. It was me grandmothers car and then aunties so want to keep her running as a lot of sentimental value. If i breathe in hard enough I can still smell the scent of german shepherd from circa 1988. Runs well but needs TLC, body work generally fine, some rust in one arch which will be welded otherwise the black paintwork polishes up a treat. Few questions. the tailgate / bootlid is mega rusted & pickled on the inside, outside you wouldn't know, but inside around the glass seal isnt' good. I've been trying to find a replacement tailgate on ebay etc for yonks.... anyone point me in the right direction? Secondly, i'm thinking of getting some lowering springs perhaps 40mm and some 13" ronals or star mags or similar.... Does any Escort fan know what kinda offset/ profiles sit best with an Escort mk4 estate / van? Trying to go for lowering springs rather than coil overs as a cheaper option at this stage. Don't wanna completely slam it is there's a few speed bumps in the locality plus my garage has a ramp on the entrance. Basically just want to get a decent lowered stance and keep the rest pretty standard! at the moment just sitting on 13s steels. Also require door glass seals on the outside, is kent trim supplies my best bet? Any tips & photos welcomed and I'll give mine a decent cleanup and post some pics. Thanks.

	I'll assume the car has been stood for some time. The first thing I would do if you plan to keep it is. Give the engine a good service. Without fail change: The cambelt: These are notorious for snapping in CVHs; their 36,000 mile schedule will burn you hard! Ever 2 years or 20k is about right. If you can't afford the tensioner and water pump just the belt will do. Beware however than the tensioner is now NLA and tricky to source; they are different for a 1.3 CVH to a 1.6. It would be a shame to need a new head for an engine when a £15 cambelt could have saved it Change the oil; the reason why all CVHs clatter isn't because 'they all do that'; its because they are very sensitive to oil changes; Some good 10W40 will set you straight. If it's burning the oil going thicker won't do much at all. Change the valve stem seals with the Sykes-Pickavent tool; they can be changed in situ with the tool Change the coolant; It's one reason why HGs can go; the differing materials can silt up and play havoc with the cooling system. My preference here is for Ford's 10 year coolant, but you want to go cheaper a 5 year OAT will be fine as long as the block is flushed clean. As for the tailgate try Steve at Speedshack; he can be resourceful in these cases. An offset between 25 and 40 will work. Going wider than 7J may cause scrapage which can potentially be avoided by going down a profile or a two on the tyre size. It will knock out your speedo however and play about with a couple of other things IME. Most of all, enjoy it ./

	You can try getting the boot of a scrap motor. I also just message people selling ruff looking runner and see if they want to break it. You be surprised how many times they say yes. The above comment is very true so I'll leave it at that.
