Hi everyone.
Looking for some much needed help and/or advice for a sticking clutch. So the details of the car are... MK3 Ford Cortina 1976 (facelift) with a new 1600GT engine and reconditioned type 9 five speed box with new clutch (done no more than 400 miles).
The car has been sitting in my garage for about 4 months (had some of that cold snowy weather a few weeks back), so went to start and drive it the other day and ran into a problem. It took a while to start, but primed the fuel filter and it eventually fired up no problem. The problem I have and looking for advice for is that it will not go in to gear while running. I am aware that if a car, any manual car, has been standing for a while, it might get a sticky clutch as the clutch plate sticks to the lining. Before I parked the car up in the garage not long before Christmas 2017, the car was running fine and clutch was working perfectly, even leaving it for a few days. The clutch peddle goes down and returns back up no problem.
So symptoms are... engine off and it will go into gear. Engine running with clutch peddle down will NOT go into gear. Things that I have tried are as follows...
1.) With engine off, put it in 1st and rocked the car back and forth.
2.) Tried starting gar in 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear with clutch peddle down and handbrake on.
3.) Started car, left it running for a couple of hours to let it warm right up.
4.)Same as above then restarted engine in first gear and kangarooing it down driveway.
5.) Engine warm and drove it up and down a short road in 1st, 2nd,and 3rd gear with clutch peddle down and stamping on brake peddle.
6.) Took the car on a longer run and mostly drove it in 2nd and pumped the clutch peddle. ( It was suggested to me to start the car in 2nd and drive it while pumping clutch but car would not start and drive in 2nd, so started it in 1st and used the engine revs to get into 2nd. I was told that I would eventually feel the clutch come back... but it didn't).
7.) Tried the above in 1st and 3rd gears.
8.) Also tied driving the car in 5th gear at a high speed (about 50MPH due to the road I was on) and at low speed, as low as I could in 5th.
From points #6 to #8, I covered just under 3 miles in one go on a wide road where I could do U turns to keep the car going. After all that, the clutch still will not work. So has anybody got any other suggestions that I could try before I find and take it to a garage where they may probably separate the gearbox from the engine and do whatever and charge me cash that I din't really have right now? Any and all suggestions would be appreciated.
Many thanks.
