Time to put the kettle on…
Selling my Scirocco that I’ve owned for the last 18 years. I bought it from a company director who had it from new and didn’t trade it in because he liked it so much, he kept it in very good condition.
I ran it for 5 years then decided I wanted to go racing, built a 1600 GTI flat head injection engine (EG code) to fit with the regulation’s (which is in the car but with a standard cam), but decided I couldn’t really afford to race, still been playing and spending money on it since then but not really used it much. The time has come to sell it as I’ve got other things to play with.
Been dry stored since I’ve had it. Was used last year but is currently SORN'd.
Good points:
Engine: Originally built @25k ago with fully balanced bottom end, 1mm oversized pistons. Ported head with 2mm oversized exhaust valves. Piper adjustable camshaft pulley. Matched inlet and exhaust manifolds. Audi throttle body, Pipercross air filter, drilled airbox. Jetex exhaust system, New water pump, coil, fuel injector’s & air bypass valve. Recent cambelt.
Gearbox rebuilt @20k ago with lower final drive of 3.94:1 from 3.67:1. New clutch also fitted at the same time (larger mk2 golf). TSR Rose jointed gear linkage. All the CVJ’s have been renewed as well!
Suspension: Koni adjustables with Eibach springs fitted all round (@25k old). Been polybushed (Superflex) except for the ARB’s. Front wishbones, tie rods etc replaced. Bonrath top mounts, OMP lower strut brace, rear axle was removed cleaned and painted
Brakes: 256mm front discs (MK 2 16V) with calipers (rebuilt) from an Audi 90 and a Passat servo. New Ferodo DS2500 pads fitted front, Goodridge hoses all round, cunifer brake lines, rear shoes and cylinders replaced.
New fuel pump, replacement tank and various pipes and fixtures…
Solid bodyshell, welding done: the normal patch for the clutch cable, tiny patch near front jacking point, o/s rear inner & outer wheel arch have had work and near shock absorber top mount. The opening around the fuel filler is starting to bubble, but not aware of rust forming anywhere else, Have kept an eye on the underside, clean & underseal when necessary, really is good for a 28 year old car!
Bad points:
Mileage shows 230K, but the engine, gearbox, suspension, brakes have all been renewed within the last 30K
The engine block I rebuilt did not have an engine number on it, so the log book still shows the old 1.8 block’s.
Engine refuses to start when up to temperature, have chased the problem with new fuel pump etc but never got to the bottom of it, possibly electrically related
The paintwork is scruffy, has lacquer peel and there are minor rust spots and scratches here and there, plus a small dent on the passenger door – see pictures.
O/S rear arch was repaired but needs some filler to make a smooth finish.
The sunroof needs a helping hand to slide back (slips on cable) the interior panel is also missing.
Speedo reads over due to lowered gearing.
Would make a great car for someone, or a good source of parts.
Looking for £1100, might seem a lot, but the car is effectively mechanically rebuilt.
Please contact me with any questions or to arrange a viewing. Thanks, James
And some pics with its previous wheels & steering wheel.
