I need a tow car, preferably diesel, preferably estate and/or 4x4, preferably sub-£3k.
I want something reliable and which will just keep on going with proper maintenance. It needs to get us to France and back each summer without any dramas and will be used to tow a fairly lightweight trailer - nothing too heavy duty (around 200kg).
Happy to hear your suggestions!

A lot will depend upon what you class as a lightweight trailer. I once did a 1000 mile journey over three and a half days towing a 6x6 trailer loaded with household effects behind an Austin 1300. Pretty much the length of New Zealand including some fairly mountainous country through the central North Island. Sat on 70mph for some considerable period on the long straight roads of South Canterbury. If your trailer is similarly sized and under about half to three-quarter ton gross laden weight then pretty much anything should pull it safely.

Without a doubt the best tow vehicle I have ever owned ( still do ) is Toyota Landcruiser 80 series. Luxury inside, smart enough outside to fit in anywhere, pull the full 3.5 tonn limit easily, not too bad on diesel, legendary reliability and off road capability. Only downer is you will struggle to get one below 3k. Just over 4 should get you a fairly good one.

If the trailer is sub-750kg all in, then anything will do. Doesn't specifically have to be a heavy duty towcar but there's no substitute for having plenty of capacity in reserve, because you never know.
For "takes abuse and keeps going", a 1.9 PD-engined Octavia Estate? Think you can get a 4x4 one (were they the Scout at that time?) as well with that engine and under budget.

Currently driving a '68 Karmann Ghia as my daily. Don't ask about previous cars - there have been way too many and I stopped counting at 160!

My Alfa 159 2.4ti diesel tows this trailer plus car easily . Early cars can be bought within your budget , they are 5 cylinder and pull very well , loads of torque . I cheated and remapped mine from the 210bhp standard to 260bhp .
