So I have a pretty heavy old engine-hoist and would like to make it mobile as every time it needs moved a few miles I need to find helpers and a van. Plus the helpers get their clothes covered in grease lifting it. Was thinking of making a low-slung bogey with trailer suspension-units. The units are rated for weight they can support which got me wondering what the crane weighs. Thought the weight might have been printed on sticker but that's barely readable. I've tried Googling Epco for data but nothing and today found out it's probably made by Tangye... There is, what I assumed was, a 'go-faster' sticker above the data one which has a logo with word Tangye in it. Googling that tonight reveals they were linked to Epco for a while and did make jacks and other hydraulic stuff. pump on crane made by Epco so I assumed whole thing was but appears made by Tangyeinformation sticker not fully legible. above it is more modern-looking sticker with Tangye logomodel no. C10/20?made September 78 possibly

That's what I was thinking strikey I actually have a trailer that could take it but would require a bit of manhandling to get it on. slater yeah I was thinking that might help. will drag it out lock-up at weekend and take picture

Hi, The model designations refer to their lifting capacities, at half and full boom. FYI - 1cwt is 112 pounds and 20cwt is 1 Ton. You're obviously a metric guy, where as I'm imperial. I know this doesn't help with telling you what weight it is but I would say it probably weighs about 150 to 200kgs. Colin Edited to remove exaggeration.

Do you have some wood and some old house scales? Man maths is making me think it's going to be about 150kg lol

Thanks for the responses guys The suspension units seem to come in 250kg, 500kg, 750kg and more so looks like smallish ones will be fine for me. I've actually bought the remains of a small trailer for £20 on Ebay. Pick it up Thursday. Plan is to take the units off that.

Hi, Modern cranes are built down to a price, older ones tended to be over engineered. Compare the sizes of component parts to see that it's likely to be heavier than modern ones.

So I got my sacrificial trailer today - for £19.99, plus the petrol to go and pick it up. I only need the suspension units, wheels and mudguards off it really, and the hitch. However will probably use some of the frame to make new one. Slight problem is one of the mudguards fell off on way home. They were help on with self-tapping screws. The hitch on it just now is a piece of square tubing with a hole for a pin to go thru but the pin on my towbar was way too thick for the hole. I just bolted to to the towbar to get home. There is another drawbar/hitch with it that goes onto a ball. I reckon I'll use that. The suspension units are pretty small and I doubt I'll be able to ID them for a rating but I found out today that all that's inside them is rubber strips so there's not a lot that go wrong I guess. I think my test will be to see if they compress much when the weight of the crane is on them. If they look too strained I'll get new ones but that will probably mean new hubs and wheels too. Meantime I can use these to work out the design of the bogey. Basically I want it to be low but I can't just hang the crane from the suspension units so will need to design some sort of cradle under the units. sacrificial trailer. mudguard somewhere between Barrhead and East Kilbride nowgot this hitch and drawbar with the trailerwelding of the units to frame looks pretty well-doneI believe there is rubber inside the units. not sure why we have 4 screws as can't be opened due to welding

bargain... I'd give the suspension units a good tappey-tap-tap to make sure they are solid all the way through , they can get a bit "delicate" from corrosion over time.

Even if it's many years later I do like to bring a conclusion to any threads I've started. I'm in the middle of repainting this crane and it is going to end up in bits so I will be able to weigh the bits individually and then will now the weight of the whole thing. However I'd really need to change the title of the thread and I also have another one going on the refurbishment of the little green trailer (change of plans - not cutting it up) so it would make sense to start a new thread about the crane and just come back in here, soon, to post the weight A couple of pics may stir some interest to the other threads the trailer got a bit of attention last year cleaning crane back to bare metal for repainting
