looking at the extra holes and crude fixings , I wonder if the badge is even original to the grill??

Surely a lion, but no peugeot lion according to this wiki pic: The lion is very similar to the 1950ies Peugeot one but not quite. And to my (enhanced by Google) knowledge there has never been a Peugeot 600 (although 604 through to 608).

Somethings telling me fiat/Seat. A quick google suggests its not for a fiat 600, but its similer. My idea when i bought the grille was that it once belonged to a special version of the Fiat 600. Several where made by the likes of Vignale, Viotti, Ghia, Moretti etc. Here is a pic of a 600 Giannini: In spite of extensive googeling I have not been able to find a Fiat 600 version with a lion grille or an Italian car maker with a lion as their symbol....

It looks small for a car of that era though - maybe off a peugeot scooter?

A lot of the ideas I had have already been suggested, I did wonder if it might be a fiat built under license as it certainly looks similar to the grille. Some lancias had similar shaped grilles but were probably bigger.
The badge does look to be off something different though. What could the grille be off if you turned it upside down ?

I've decided strikey is right and it's a frankenstein grill. The burgundy peugeot badge has been fitted onto the grill afterwards in place of the original badge that would have fitted on the inner holes visible from behind. Maybe...
