With the nightmare handling needing sorting it was time for new rear shocks, discs and bearings. VW up. Off with the old rusty discs... And on with all the news bits including vow lower suspension bolts. Excuse the dirty spring... The handling & braking is much improved. Sadly Rudy failed MOT on non functioning airbag & abs warning lights. I found the plug behind the panel for the warning lights disconnected, which is never a good sign. With it reconnected the airbag check light works but the ABS one stays on despite brakes working perfectly. Two OBD fault code readers won’t read the codes so it looks like I need an auto electrician with vagcom diagnostics to tell me what’s up... If you can offer any assistance with my problem please see my other thread: Clicky

ABS Problem solved!I tested both sensors and the resistance was just above 1000ohms for both. I also did a voltage test on the sensor with wheels turning and found that neither was measuring any current which made me suspect the reluctor rings...turns out both were spinning on the rear of the disks held in place by the strength of the magnet in the sensor...fitted new rings this morning and tested. Sure enough there’s voltage. Turned on ignition and abs light went out! Took it for a spin around the block and ABS is now fully functional. Old vs new sensor ring. Fitted very snugly with aid of hammer & block of wood to rear of new brake discs. Perfectly positioned and taking readings now! Happy days. Off to MOT retest in the morning.

MOT PASSED Man what a mission, but I do appreciate my local mot testers attention to detail even if it drives me nuts sometimes...and he keeps noting corrosion on brake lines when it’s minimal. Thorough has its limits... I took Rudy back for a retest today, as they couldn’t see it yesterday, bang on 11 days from the original test, and it didn’t pass due to the rear brakes being imbalanced. I’ve got to say I was pretty annoyed. It was marginal. And all to do with the off side rear. Bearing in mind the cars done maybe 30 miles on its brand new discs, not even had the chance to bed in yet, so braking performance is going to be a long way from its best. Anyway picked up the car after lunch sped home, jacked it up, and stripped the rear right caliper off and gave the piston a good load of attention. Lubricated it through the seal, wound it in, pushed it out, more lube, wound it in, pushed it out (pump brakes), bled it a little & so on - did this a half dozen times until the piston moved freely. Put it all back together then shot back to the MOT station for it to go back on the rollers. And pass...the beer!

With a break in the weather I headed of to my local scrappy to scavenge some parts from a Golf mk3 they had in the breakers yard. It turned out that it was a R reg GTi which was good news as it had some specific trim bits that Rudy actually needed. While the govt. keeps trying to convince us all that older cars are evil some of us will continue to keep Retro tin on the roads...even diesels. Nice little stash. Anyway...front reflective tow eye covers fitted up along with lower bumper grills. Pity the indicator lenses look so muddy. Headlining next then body work.

Headliner! With years of water ingress through the aerial hole the headlining was damaged and saggy. It had to be turfed if I could find a good replacement or refreshed. I choose the latter... First things first was to strip off the old fabric: ...and then let it dry out. Then using a stiff bristled garden brush remove all the old layer of foam... To leave the plain fibre headliner. Then apply copious amounts of spray on adhesive then carefully stick down the van liner fabric. I choose that to cover the headliner as it has amazing stretchability... With the new fabric stuck down it was time to cut to shape, not forgetting all the holes for the roof trim and handles etc. And back in it went! I'm loving the contrast with he creme fittings and the black headliner is a good match for the black seat upholstery and black door trims. Now on to the body work

ruairi50 just disconnect and pop the whole fixture in the dishwasher? Or try separate them from the housing first? This afternoon I dropped Rudy off at a friends body shop for some attention. The arches are rusted terribly under the plastic trims. There are new wings and other things going to happen over there. Should be fab when I get it back.

I hate the way the original BBS wheels look and can only get them refurbished in a weeks time so... Ghetto GTi wheels will tide Rudy over the long weekend. Need to sort the trim out now while the sun shines

Liking the progress. I remember with my Mk3 GTI how skitty and loose the rear can get on worn shocks... Put new ones on and the transformation was immense!
