Sounds like my kind of fix - I will see if I source one at sensible money My Range Rover just got written off and I'll be breaking it shortly. It's got what I believe is a factory towbar and when it was last used, all the wiring for the trailer was working. Already purchased a harness but by all means give me a shout if you have a decent towbar that's coming off yours - needs to be a P38 though - Chris

Smart looking beast for its age! Never been a P38 lover but they have grown on me in the last 6 months or so and are definitely a LOT of car for the money

After trawling all over the web I managed to source a good quality tow bar through my local motor factors in the next village - first job was to remove the rear bumper Mudflap screws - self tappers into spire clips were all seized so I ended up taking the heads off the screws with the power file to release the flaps - in turn allowing access to the screw stubs / spire clips Bumper removed - just 2 bolts and 2 locking clips for the side location fittings - the tow bar is straight forward fit and makes use of all factory drilled holes - so nothing to drill etc - I applied a Dinitrol Penetrant wax over the fittings & tow bar before refitting the bumper The factory loom has gang plug on the offside along with a factory drilled hole / grommet for the wiring to run to the towing socket for the electrics - not wanting to splice anything in and preferring the easy option of plug & play I ordered a 2 part factory towing electrics loom from Rimmer Brothers - what did I find in the box - first part of the correct factory loom and the socket wired but just back to bare cables no factory gang plugs - so I had to splice it anyway and make my own connections up - I could have sent it back / faffed around / spent an age on the phone with them - and should have - having spent a premium with them to obtain the factory looms in the first place - I could have done it for 25% of the cost and just spliced a generic socket in - frankly I just don't have the time to pi55 about with them - and no more orders with Rimmers ever again - every other order I make with them they c0ck up - end of rant Tow ball on - electrics tested - mudflaps refitted with new spire clips & screws - ready to tow - which is just has well I have a fair bit of sorting / running around with the trailer and general decluttering of various storage areas - having now acquired vehicle storage large enough to consolidate all my storage under one roof - the workshop will remain at home though Replaced the dead offside front fog lamp - so that's another thing off the list only to find a broken T piece on the headlamp washer tube - so that needs sorting And the motor put the very use that it was purchased for - alloy wheels in the back & load of Audi parts in the side

Did you go for one of those modern 13-pin sockets? I’ve just finished converting all of my stuff to those; much better than the older 7-pin ones IMHO.

My worst worry about dying is my wife selling my stuff for what I told her it cost...

Just wondering how much the towbar set you back? I'll be heading back to the UK next week, and am in need of a towbar for my Mk2 Focus Estate, but except for a couple of online places, I can't see many prices. I'd like to be able to just pop in and buy one, as I'll be travelling around for a week or so, and have no address to send it to.

Hi Pete, that link didn't work for some reason. (says item deleted or no longer available) I'll probably have to email a couple of breakers and see if I can get it cheap. Sorry for the thread diversion Chris.

Sorry for the thread diversion Chris. It's not a problem at all - mine came from my local factors - they had to order it but had it in stock by the next day - new ones appear to be £80 - £100 - try this e bay link - it has a load of them on there www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2380057.m570.l1311.R1.TR12.TRC2.A0.H0.Xford+focus+tow.TRS0&_nkw=ford+focus+towbar&_sacat=0You are welcome to use my address to send it to if you purchase anything along with my workshop facilities to fit it - I'm 50 miles west of London - let me know if I can help - Chris

The P38 really coming into it's own now - road trip over the last few days has seen this in the back Jowett Javelin engine - delivered to a fellow Javelin owner Then a trailer collected and a long 480 mile round trip to collect / deliver parts / vehicles & look at likely candidates for future workshop bookings - it's very comfortable, all the room I need, tows like a train, very powerful but drinks fuel at an alarming rate which has to be the cost of it providing everything else - still quite a few odds to do on it - it's become obvious that with the self levelling suspension that a drop plate is required for the tow hitch, the radio / CD is still U/S but somehow I really like the soundtrack of that burbling V8

Just a quick word of warning, check the chassis plate to make sure its legally allowed to tow, i know there was a big set to a few years ago with some range rovers that went to japan (and werent plated for towing, as the japanese don't allow it iirc)but ended up back over here for some reason and were sold as uk spec cars. Problem was, whilst they were indeed 'uk spec' the chassis plates didnt have any allowance for towing, something happened to one unlucky owner whilst towing and ended up in court as he was technically using a vehicle illegally.....
Now we all know that a range rover can tow 3.5t perfectly safely, but apparently as it wasnt plated as such, and land rover refused to replate it saying that it could tow, the book was well and truley thrown at him......
Fingers crossed yours is fine!! It certainly looks a good one!

This is, as you would expect, now bookmarked.
Nice find, Chris.
Nanocom is indispensable and makes life so much easier.
Sorry to hear about Rimmers, they've always been spot on with my stuff. Just as well really. 😊
Enjoy wafting!

Fitted the new adjustable drop plate for the tow hitch yesterday - not sure how they make these for under £40 - solid bit of kit, plated & delivered the next day for that money Had to relocate the trailer socket though has the drop plate restricted the access to it - now side mounted to a socket bracket I will leave the ball plate & pins off when not towing otherwise they become easily removed by whoever fancies them Still would not fancy running into this though with the front of a modern! Also managed to sort the broken T connector on the headlamp washers with a generic 60p item from my local motor factors- only after much faff though
