I've not posted on RR for a while, though I do visit regularly. There has not been a project in the garage since I sold the 1990 Cherokee Wagoneer Limited last year (supposed to be appearing in the new series Deep State on Fox channel starting April). I still have my 1995 C36 AMG but that's more regular maintenance than project. After the Jeep went I looked around for an early 944 project, but then an impending house move put the brakes on that. We moved in November and with lots to do around the house I parked the idea of a project until last week, when a friend pointed me to a very sorry looking W210 E36 AMG. With the usual period Merc corrosion and high miles (200K+), it was in danger of being broken for spares. With reputedly less than 400 made, it had to be worth saving. Cynics would say the E36 was a stop-gap model until the V8's were introduced, my rose tinted spectacles saw a very rare AMG, significant in the early post merger MB-AMG days. The MOT history looked honest enough, with corrosion mentioned mostly on advisories. Reported jerky up change from 2nd to 3rd is common on the 4 speeds with low oil I kept telling myself My emergency car buying fund had been depleted by new double glazing, so I tried to convince my (W210 facelift) E class owning Father in Law to buy it, to no avail. I rattled around for a week, Mrs Notwen knew I had tried to get her dad to buy it, so it was no surprise to her when presented with man maths on the back of an old envelope. A few chats with the seller and a price we were both happy with was agreed. The E36 was added to my list of cars purchased unseen in the flesh. The agreement with SWMBO is, it gets parked up until the decorating and other DIY jobs are done, oh,and we are eating beans on toast for the next 2 months+. That's fine with me, as it will give me chance to asses the condition and draw up a plan. Current thinking is to buy a complete W210 saloon for the doors and boot, if I'm really lucky I may get one with useable wings... Hopefully, that would also yield cross member and jacking pints if those are shot. Seller pictures, as I still haven't seen it in the flesh, it is due to be dropped off on Saturday.

Bookmarked. With the care free attitude of most peolle it's good to see that one car that's in the wilderness has been saved. Breaking it and throwing the engine into something lighter and smaller is too easy.

My transport guy was having trailer issues on Saturday, so I ended up insuring it and nipping over to Chester to collect it. Apart from a wheel or 2 needing balance, it drove really well. Once we were on the motorway and it was all warmed through and I was reasonably confident nothing was going to fall off, or for it to launch me into the scenery, we gave it chance to clear a few cobwebs. It's got the usual MB pedal travel before something happens, but then it's off like a demon. Back home and a quick once over with the wheels off: The outer panels are pretty scabby, some more than others. Jacking points seem sound, though I have not taken off the sill covers yet to fully explore. Inner wings are ok, they are starting to go where they meet the front panel Radiator support seems ok Floor and chassis rails seem ok, though the rubberised coating is coming away and more investigation will be required. Rear subframe mounts are as above. Boot floor is good with a small area near the back panel. Onto the good stuff, the interior is in fine fettle, again, not betraying it’s age. It’s all there and it all appears to work, even the First Aid kit is still there, unopened. In good company. So… what’s next? Nothing basically, its being parked up while I keep up my side of the deal. At risk of being stoned next time I am in the presence of W210 owners, my plan will be to get a complete, standard W210 and raid it for panels. They are still cheap and plentiful enough to be the most cost effective route (though front wings are always an issue, so I’ll budget for genuine MB ones). Plus there are enough Silver ones about to avoid the need to colour change.

Bookmarked. I have an N plate E320 Elegance that is largely rust free. The early ones were made with better steel I'm told?
Mine has crusty rear arches but otherwise pretty good. Just flew through MOT last week with zero advisories! Mind you, I only do 700 miles a year tops.

I got in touch with a mate, who knows the cleaner at Mercedes, who knows the archive guy blah blah, trying to find out a bit more about W210 E36's There were 56 imported into the UK in 1996 and 94 imported in 1997 I am still trying to get confirmation of just how early mine is as the engine number is 104995 22 000019, which implies mine has the 19th W210 spec E36 engine built. (I ignored the "22" as my C36 has the same identifier after the 104941)
"How many left shows" 43 were licensed for 1996 and a total of 123 W210 E36's by 1997, granted there will have been a few stolen and/or thrown at the scenery, but in the first year a drop of 23% is a fair decrease in numbers. Currently 17 licensed and 39 SORN

Nice car, I have a silver E55 myself. What is the power output vs the E55? Bit of a difference... E36 was around 275hp (284lb.ft), the E55 350hp (400lbft)? Apparently back in the day, people knew there was a V8 W210 AMG due, why wouldn't you hold onto your £50+k a bit longer.

370 BHP from the E55 IIRC. So yeah a fair bit of difference. Bet the E36 is a bit more nimble around the corners though.
Nice car. Well underrated W210's.

Though the plan was to do nothing for now, I can't help but tinker. Called in at Dronsfield Mercedes Breakers earlier in the week, just get an idea of what panels may be available for the E36 AMG. Looked at a W210 not much better than mine, we then got guided to a saloon with decent bonnet, wings that have been replaced in the last few years and a boot lid that’s good, but a bit of surface rust around the lock, but nowhere near as bad as mine. Deciding that forgiveness is easier than permission I purchased them… Now awaiting time to fit them. I have a lead on some decent doors too.

Only a brief update, as I'm still taters' deep in house stuff. Purchased 4 good doors in 744 Silver and smuggled them into the garage. A couple of weeks ago, I needed to get the E36 out of the garage so I could get to my ladders to do something or other at height. Got slightly distracted and what started as "I'll just see what's involved in removing the door panel" turned into a door swop.

An impending job change means I could do with rehoming the E36AMG. It's advertised on RR: E36 AMG For SaleI'm not expecting a quick sale, so updates will continue when I get chance to tinker.

Hi there, just thought I'd make contact to share thoughts, as I've got one as well...
Paid too much for it, had it a couple of years. Super car in every way, great on long journeys - last year it went to Cornwall and Le Mans for the classic weekend. Mine has a LPG conversion so its a bit cheaper to run at 55p per litre. Its got an annoying air leak which makes it surge/hunt on tick over, but as soon as you pull away, drives perfectly. Suspect its linked to perished rubber pipes on inlet tract for the LPG system. Either that or dirty throttle butterfly...curse word to get into. on my W124 (same engine, 280E) you can just wiggle the whole body out and clean it on the bench. Best way to use the LPG is on the motorway, trundling along at near speed limit, or tootling around town - I get about 250 miles out of the 60l doughnut tank in spare wheel well, which is pretty good, but if you want full power, turn it off! Mine also has "body issues" but none of the panels need replacing, its just a decent spray job required, and as I see there is one for sale for £18,000 (!!!!!!!!!!!) I might just get it done. My neatest fix so far? ...replacing the anti-lock brake sensor ring (the reluctor band, old one rusted to dust) on the rear off side drive shaft, with taking the drive shaft out....Hope my ramblings of interest, Trevor
