Could the number on the chassis just be a chassis number and not the vin number ?

possibly i assumed the vin number was on the chassis under the rear seat

I haven't had much to do with VW's so you are probably correct. A lot of older British cars had body numbers which were different to those stamped on the ID plates. I've had Triumphs with seperate chassis and I'm pretty sure they had chassis numbers and body numbers. What info is it you wanted to check ?

I was just checking to see if all was ok with it never run one an older classic before ill check the log book against the chassis and if that agrees I can't imagine there would be a problem ... Could be wrong though just don't want to lose my hard earned
Forgot to mention the begining of the vin says it's a 67 beetle

don't think that a 67 will have the modern format 17 digit VIN , not sure what year it was formally introduced

Nah i know the vins on them from around that time were 9 numbers long the first two are 11 which tells me it's a beetle then the third is a 7 which means it's a 67 beetle
done a bit more searching on the numbers, the one this has starts as 1171 all websites i have checked suggest this is a 1966 vin number could it be likely this car sat around before it was registered?
gonna check the v5 to see if this agrees with whats on the chassis
just found you can find a vin number out on the vw website seems strange as they have it down as 1771 followed by the exact same numbers on the chassis for the registration no.

Assuming VW were the same as most manufacturers then a 1967 model would be built between September 66 and August 67 or thereabouts, so it may be a late 66 built car.

Hi, A point of interest at the time. Up to 1966 the registration period was January to December, in 1967 it changed. 'E' suffix was January 1967 to July 1967, then 'F' was August 1967 to July 1968. This was changed because of pressure from new car dealers, their argument being it was too busy over the Christmas period getting cars ready for the new reg in January. Ironically sales fell off as the year progressed because people were waiting for new reg in the August. In the following years it was noticeable that there weren't many 'E' reg cars about.

An old road registered dump truck I own apparently shares the vin with an old motorbike, causes confusion both ways when a hpi is done.

Vin's were not compulsory on British market cars til some time in 1979 and then they could be only 11 or 12 digits long. The 17 digit Vin was MUCH later.
What your beetle has is a "chassis number" which is not the same thing. Modern computer systems are not programmed to cope with these earlier style numbers and give you an automatic warning, simply because the pre- VIN number does't have the "correct" number of digits. Don't sweat it, it's probably kosher! I'm guessing you're using the number stamped into the gearshift tunnel under the back seat yes?

3rd digit in gives the year , as stated before could have sat a while before registering , also 67 was the change over year to new model 12 volt etc

I worked for a VW dealer in the early 80's and the new model year started in September as most European manufacturers used to close down for most of August (less use of robots in those days !). So a 67 chassis could have been manufactured between September 66 up to July/August 67 if that was the same case then.

As said before, VW were making 1967 model year cars from September 1966 to August 1967. The chassis numbers for these will all start 117, but will be on a D registration, E registrAtion and a few on F registrations! '67 Beetles are real oddball cars with lots of one year only features.
Thesamba.com has a section on dating cars from the chassis numbers down to the month. A 1977 Beetle will also start with 117 but have more characters in the chassis number.
