More for curiosity than any other reason I printed off some details 1:1 - as I only have an A4 printer at home its a bit Heath but it does show up two things. 1. The theory works - - well, hardly groundbreaking is it building to a drawing - LOL - However, it will help no end in getting the correct profiles cut and progressing this project along. 2. In the 1990's Ginetta could not cut or weld consistently to within 1/8" - Well at least it was an improvement from the 70's when it was 1/4" Although, the 1/8" is still working within a 1% tolerance ! Make anything appear more than acceptable with the correct choice of comparative Just wish it were a bit cooler out there so I would feel more inclined to get out there and do something - I may go and rake up apples! and cut the grass ......

The best thing that you will find useful is the FEA testing you can do to find any weak points in the design.

I am quite getting into this now - Too bloody warm outside so in between snoozing, the GP and some 3D CAD tutorials to gain a bit of insight I completed the side elevation - I may end up with a plan section view as well because these drawings will come in handy in finding the best position for the steering rack.

Just noticed that the front elevation above was an older version before using additional layers and mirror functions. - Also did a quick test here throwing a couple of lines across for steering rack location. Another long weekend so I have a couple of days to get stuck into the cars - pesky heat or not stuff will get done.

With the Sunscreen on I set to acclimatise myself by doing some garden chores like - cutting the fecking grass. Although to be fair it has not really grown much recently and I have not seen brown grass since I moved up here from Bedfordshire when, without fail, the grass would be brown from May to September. Fired up the chop saw and the digital angle rule and cut some steel. Really quite happy with how this is progressing. Welding stuff next.

Great work and cutting.
The only thing I would say is It need more triangulation where you have (for want of a better word) the Kinky bit at the top as the forces will be very high there with the top wish bone pivots trying to push in to the centre of the frame.

There was me thinking I had over engineered it - LOL Worth taking into consideration that the sprung mass is only 500kg there are 20 other attachment points sharing the loads and there is a brace from one side to the other on the front mount. However will be bridging the two separate uprights with a 20 x 1.5 tube at the weld join which will then tie to the chassis in the centre via another 20x40x1.5 where the coil-over mount will be. But that's as much as its getting.

All that it needs is this on the pivot plates so that the plate hooks under the top cross bar and the shear force is spread across the top horizontal bar rather than just on the welds.

I will carry on the path chosen and have a look at it when it's all complete. If it looks weak I will amend. The forces there are not as great as you would think this is how I found the top wishbone joint.

So where were we with this thing. Working on the front suspension - and that is where we still are unfortunately, whilst we await some moving around of projects in order to provide the space for progress forward to be made. At the moment the garage is full of other curse word due to the shed space being needed for playing with glassfibre - and an urgent job for another project needed to be done - that is all about to change in the next week so we may be able to get back on track with the G27 which will also allow the Strato's to progress. It's a rather messy juggling act, much like running three project threads at once and trying to keep them all cohesive. I think it was better with them all in the same thread swapping between each in a progressive time line. Having separate threads is very difficult to manage especially as they all depend on one another for progress. I guess it's just me making work harder for myself by having so many projects on the go at the same time. By mid August I hope that everything will be much clearer. Cut and paste this to the other threads and just move a few words about. Lets have a photo or two - a copy from the cafe racer thread. This is where we were at some time back testing out the overall look for the final item.

We will be having a bit of a push on this project over the next couple of days. I spent all day yesterday in the searing heat clearing the garage and moving things about. Due to the recent project buying idiocy it will be no surprise to learn that space has become a bit of a premium. As there are now six projects littering the place, and as they are all in various stages of dis-assembly, the said pieces of the six cars need to be stored and the garage had been the dumping ground, effectively burying the project that needs to be done in order for the rest to progress.
Later today there will be a trip to the dump to clear the decks of all the rubbish that was sorted out/removed from the two recent purchases, plus a trip to the DIY sheds to pick up a couple more storage boxes.
G27 front suspension here we come.

Well I did do the trip to the tip and also picked up a couple of storage boxes and that's about as far as it got as the clearing up and tidying up in this heat just left no energy for anything else. I did however get to assembling all the required parts to make the jig so that I can weld up the suspension assemblies for both sides and I also removed one diagonals from the frame - then went and tidied the shed some more. Jig production during the week and maybe fire the TIG up one evening for some TIG Tacking.

I have been getting on with the suspension on the G27 and we now have an almost completed O/S/F - The other projects and works through a bit of a spanner in the works but I have sorted out a process which seems to work so I have plans to have the full front end completed by the end of next weekend. And all because I did not like the look of this. Silly really. No work tomorrow - taking a walk up Snowdon.

Your version looks stronger than the original. Indeed, and also much much nicer.

Your version looks stronger than the original. Indeed, and also much much nicer. Cheers both - I doubt that mine is actually stronger than the original as that is/was a huge 1/8" plate affair that weighs a good few kilo's - It is complete overkill and as well as being pig ugly none of the actual holes for mounting the wishbones actually line up! My replacement should be much lighter strong enough for the application and also have done away with the pin type coil over mounting. Much cutting and grinding later we have a N/S/F blank canvas All up we should have saved around 3kg in weight. And more importantly, in my eyes, it looks right plus we have the added benefit of a huge range of adjustment.
