had two, first suffered from the erratic temp gauge, going into limp-home, never did manage to get to the bottom of it, cured by selling to a banger racer. Others are on youtube doing the same, nobody found the answer last time I checked. Second suffered from a myriad of electrical maladies, and rust, ends of sills, didn't bother with it when the MOT expired. Seems to me that they have a built-in self-destruct mode at around 150K miles. Swore after that we'd never have another 1.6. Apparently the 1.8's are a bit better

Apparently the 1.8's are a bit better That was down to an HT lead interference. Ford issued a recall to put in a relocated loom. It did bring on more lights too. But anyway, I had one. It's one of the best cars I've ever had. My mate bought it in 2004 on 77k and took it up to 123k in 2006 when I entered the frame and it became mine. I owned it for over a year and a half where it was then given to my sister. We sold it on 155k. There are a few things to look out for on them. -Rust ; They rust on the sills due to idiot tyre shops jacking them up without jack pads on the jacks or being careless. The tailgate tends to rust in the 'V" below the glass where the wiper motor is. -Cambelts ; they are due every 100k/10 years. With pattern bits I'd be tempted to halve that or at least change it every 60k or 6 years. Apart from that, not alot. Getting a tidy one will be a hard thing though ; they are very much in the bangernomics territory.

My mum had one for years I borrowed a few times, good all rounder but not sure if it's because I'm tall, the seating position felt well off, more sat on it than in it.

Doesn't explain all the electrical faults we had with the other one, also seems strange that when I queried it with the dealer after buying a new CANBUS temp switch (stupid thing that sat in a blind hole between nos 2 and 3 plugs, but not in a waterway) they knew nothing about any recalls, because I asked

The clocks are prone to failing on the mk1 and 1.5 - it announces itself with erratic gauges and needles dropping to 0 on all gauges -otherwise they're pretty bomb proof. They handle a peach and the Mazda sourced engines are as reliable as clockwork.

Some will bend over backwards to help you. Others only ever care about selling new cars and will at takes due to carelessness damage your older Ford. You can guess what kind of dealer is near me!
