Good morning all, I'm posting on behalf of my dad who is deciding what to do with his 1987 TD 90.
Currently has an issue of loads of smoke from the exhaust, so thinking rebuild time, or, (slightly influenced by myself) V8 it.
So question is, what will mate up to the standard manual box, am I right in thinking it would be a MT75?
We don't want a monster of a job, I'm guessing this should be a well trodden path, thinking petrol, but open to suggestions on diesels if its something funky!
Any ideas welcome, thanks for your time!
Matt

The old Rover V8 was an option in the 90, so will fit. This includes the 3.5, 3.9, 4.2, 4.0 and 4.6. The gearbox is the LT77, but being the old TD it'll be the short pinion type and to the best of my knowledge the V8's were only ever fitted to long pinion LT77 'boxes. You do have a couple of options there, either find a saloon spec LT77 V8 bellhousing but those are getting rare and pricey these days, or find a series V8 adapter kit which will bolt to the existing TD bellhousing, but both require a small irreversible mod to the V8 crankshaft to fit due to the larger diameter. This will leave you with a really low geared transmission becuase it'll probably still have the 1.4 transfer box.
The better option I think would be to find a complete LT77 or preferably R380 V8 gearbox and 1.2 ratio LT230 transfer box from a Discovery and swap it all in, assuming you've got space infront of the TD engine to mount the V8 further forwards. This may also mean you wouldn't have to modify the footwells to fit the wider V8 engine.
If you're not completely set on a V8, there are countless other engines that can be fitted, and it's down to how much you want to spend and what time, space and skills you have to undertake such a project....

Quite honestly, if you want a V8 Landy, you'd be better off selling the 90 and buying one, probably not what you wanted to hear, but theres quite a lot involved with this conversion. I'd be looking to fit a TDI, which can be tuned quite successfully, bigger turbo, intercooler, boost pin etc etc
Usual 'Do as I say, not as I do' comment, since I've got some majorly modified landies, and I don't take any notice of my own advice!

I did the exact same swap with my 110 .... Td to Rover 8 ..... as said, the V8 will not bolt straight on to the box, i made the harder for myself by using the engine and box from a Range Rover. The gearbox was a 4 speed jobbie ( it was an old rangie) and longer than the 110 box meaning i had to move the engine forwards to fit and keep gear stick the same position as the original. Had to chop and make new engine mounts. The bottom rad hose required some bodging to get to fit. The only good side to all this ( apart from the noise loverrrrlyyyyy) was you could get to the bellhousing bolts very easily,i could get the engines out in an hour easily. Get an engine and box from a V8 90. You may have to fettle the mounts, but it’ll be easier ... ...

Oh yes, you’ll need to swap the gearbox cover and bulkhead plate for V8 ones, the td ones don't fit the V8 box.

Thank you for the replies, I wasn't aware that panels etc need swapping, I was kind of hoping that it was essentially engine out, new engine in then modify/ renew bits and bobs. Thinking more along the line of a rebuild of the standard lump, being that its all original, matching numbers etc.
Thanks! Matt
