I believe an A-Frame tow still require the vehicle to be taxed, insured and MoT'd as the car is technically 'on the queens highway' due to two of the wheels being in contact with the tarmac. If on a trailer it is the trailers wheels that are in contact, not the cars so in that instance the car doesn't need tax, insurance and MoT (unless it falls off the trailer!!) The vehicle if being towed by an A frame that is all four wheels in contact with the road and nobody sitting steering etc the towed car is classed as a trailer. Therefore no tax nor mot or insurance required. Must have light board and good tyres though If being towed and towed vehicle needs someone steering and breaking then needs tax mot and insurance. If being towed with front wheels off the ground rear wheels on the ground it needs tax mot and insurance. Cheers bm And if it weighs more than 750kg it would need to be braked ......... but actually if it has all four wheels on the ground it need an MOT .... If no MOT it needs to be suspended tow or on a dolly .....

But, as soon as you stop it becomes a car that is illegally on the road!!
A very grey area from which I was previously prosecuted and ended up paying two years of back tax and a fine from the prosecution!! Luckily no points though.

Ok this is a big grey area, the owners of the mini said ''its ok if your taking it for MOT or taking it for a test drive, ive already checked it out''. I wasnt sure about this, but she seemed pretty sure. I'm now off to look at a Cube instead. Newer, less miles, less price, more interesting.

Unless its being taken to or from a prebooked Mot or place of repair ......... It's the other way around. All four wheels and being towed without a driver as in solid tow then it's classed as a trailer. No mot tax or insurance required but tyres must be legal. If a frame front suspended then needs mot tax and insurance. 😊

I may be getting slightly confused. If an A frame lifts the front wheels to tow then it is not classed as a trailer it needs everything a car does to be on the road.
If all four wheels are on the ground and being towed like behind a motor home or car etc. then it is classed as a trailer.
Sorry if I confused the issue.
