Ive not bought a car for a few years and ive just found one to possibly buy, 2009 1.4 mini one for a daily. Has a new mot, low mileage, looks mint. One problem. Its currently sorn. My current daily runs out of insurance and tax at the end of the month, so the plan would be to sit the mini on the drive until the 1st of march and get it taxed and insured from then on. Sooooo, how the heck do i get it home without taxing it? Its local enough(a short run through the lanes), is it permissable in these circumstances to drive it home just to leave it on the drive, or will it all go pete tong if i get pulled, or mysteriously sensed by one of many possible random cameras?
I'm guessing my options will be (1) leave where it is until 1st March (2) transport it back to mine by way of trailer or truck (3) just tax it and use it, which will mean trowing a months tax in the bin.

Untaxed is untaxed in the eyes of the law, so if it's further than the end of the road I'd either trailer it or tax it, if you get caught it would have been cheaper to tax it, but then you might not get a tug.

Tax it and be done with it. I'd probably risk driving it home of it was down some lanes and in the dark tbh.

Risking driving without tax is one thing, but in this instance, it would be uninsured also.
Legally, you can either put it on your insurance temporarily, which many allow, then tax it. Another option is to pay someone local with some trade plates to move it for you, which I'm sure you'd need to pay a small sum for - probably cheaper doing the first option.

pretty much what i thought. Its not like it needs to be said but as this is my first experience of how buying/selling a car can be affected by this stupid system, I can only say what a pain it is. I'm not in the habit of trying to get away with it, uninsured is uninsured, end off. If i have the car i think theres a good chance ill just go with the 'suck-it-up and get the tax' option. I was just hoping there might be a chance that you could drive it untaxed if you had literaly just bought the car and were driving it home. It seems theres not, and I'm not willing to take that chance.
I wonder how much money the dvla make each year with this sort of situation?

No tax = vehicle impounded and paying over £100 to get it back (£100 if within 24 hours, £200 after that plus £160 bond) No Insurance = Vehicle impounded £150 impound costs, 6 points on licence and £300 fine. Paying a local recovery company = £50 (ish) No brainer really, as for how much the DVLA make for cars being 'double taxed' for a month its no where near how much they don't make from others who don't bother taxing, also remember everytime someone 'taxes' a tax exempt car it costs the DVLA about £30 but I do agree this non transferable tax thing is a bit daft but was bought about because of people not taxing cars.

Don't know the fact it's already MOT'd would stop you from booking another So how would that work when you are not going in the direction of the MOT station and don't have insurance, traffic cops aren't dumb and have heard all the excuses before they would very quickly work out you've just bought the car and you are trying it on.

Swap your insurance over and then tax it and use it now. You’re only losing 3 weeks tax on your existing car. Roughly what ? £20. It’ll cost you more to get the new car recovered home.

Yeah true that, seals the deal for me then. If I do end up buying the car and have it sitting on the drive i'll probably end up itching to drive it anyway lol.

You would need to insure it for a day, ill see how it works out with the insurance company, ill probably just swap the insurance over from my current car, they are both the same insurance group so should work out about the same.

Here in New Zealand I'd just take a chance on it as the risk of getting caught, especially in a rural area, is small.

Ask your insurers. Mine let me add a new car - and kept insurance on the old one for a month so I could advertise it and legally take folk out on test-drives. Then book it for an mot (because you want a stict mot and you're not sure if the one it has was done by his mate). Make sure the mot is somewhere past your house, if the car starts making funny noises, best take it home to fix it and ring to cancel the mot. Or borrow an A-frame and tow it home? Or persuade the fools who put the new system in place to change it to a sensible system

Went to look at it, turns out they have a way of getting it to my place, which helps. First time ive been in a new mini and i got total modern-car-shock, if there is such a thing. And visions in my head of massive bills in the near future. And its overpriced and needs a service. Comfortable tho. nice owner too. very nice.

Or borrow an A-frame and tow it home? I believe an A-Frame tow still require the vehicle to be taxed, insured and MoT'd as the car is technically 'on the queens highway' due to two of the wheels being in contact with the tarmac. If on a trailer it is the trailers wheels that are in contact, not the cars so in that instance the car doesn't need tax, insurance and MoT (unless it falls off the trailer!!)

If on a trailer it is the trailers wheels that are in contact, not the cars so in that instance the car doesn't need tax, insurance and MoT (unless it falls off the trailer!!) The vehicle if being towed by an A frame that is all four wheels in contact with the road and nobody sitting steering etc the towed car is classed as a trailer. Therefore no tax nor mot or insurance required. Must have light board and good tyres though If being towed and towed vehicle needs someone steering and breaking then needs tax mot and insurance. If being towed with front wheels off the ground rear wheels on the ground it needs tax mot and insurance. Cheers bm

May have got confused with terminology. Re A frame. Sorry but if towed by one of those towing dolly things that leaves towed cars all four wheels on the ground. It's classed as trailer
Sorry for confusion
