Obviously rear engined.
I’m thinking of diverting the exhaust forwards from the engine if it doesn’t fit straight out from the side.
Is there any reason this might cause issues? I can have an L shaped tail pipe so that points sideways if that is a problem.
It just feels more natural for fumes to exit the engine and backwards out through the exhaust but is there a physics / technical reason that it can’t be routed forwards?
Reason for doing this is purely down to space / avoiding suspension components etc.

Is the exhaust side of the engine facing forwards? There's no problem pointing the exhaust any way you like, as long as it's not fouling anything and secured properly.

Red is current (not standard) but it’s too close to the leaf spring for my liking and knocks against it. Pink is planned but think silencer is too long to fit. Blue is the basis for the question.

Can you shorten the length of the bend to the silencer to bring it more central? The blue would be fine but I'd want it exiting from the side of the vehicle rather than underneath - unsure if there's an MOT stipulation for this??
EDIT:
Requirements
Complete, secure, without serious leaks and silences effectively.
Exhaust system
Test procedure
The exhaust system must be free from serious leaks or advanced corrosion. The entire system must be securely fixed to the vehicle as intended either by using exhaust mounts or the common rubber fitting mounts. The exhaust system must have the required number of silencers for your specific make and model of car. Your vehicle may fail the MOT due to noise levels if deemed to be excessive by the MOT inspector.
Nothing in there about direction of the exhaust or the tailpipe.

Thanks for your help, it wasn’t so much the legal aspect I was concerned about but more the worry about fumes not emitting properly as the truck moves in a direction opposite to the fumes. It can’t be moved more central as the gear linkage thingy or whatever the official name is runs down the middle.

That'd only be a problem in standing traffic.

I can't see any issue with your suggestion. Older HGVs (Commer TS3 for example) had it under the front bumper! I'm assuming there isn't space to go for a transverse, longer (or second) silencer and exit rear left?

Thanks Phil The standard silencer was transverse across rear of the truck but I’m trying to keep everything away from the rear axle / suspension components where possible.

In that case, there's no problem I can see, per se, for having it coming forwards and exiting before the front wheel (option Blue) - will that give you enough room?

Yes as standard the battery and spare wheel are there but the spare wheel went missing some time in a previous ownership and I’ve relocated the battery in the bed to create space underneath and ease of access.

I got a verbal advisory last year on my Pajero because the tail pipe extender was missing and it finished in the middle of the boot floor.
Think it was just FYI so I didn’t kill myself.
