Having deduced the Vanos seals in my M52 have failed I'm looking to replace them.
Timing tools are easy enough to get hold of, however I'm wondering where the best place in the UK to get myself a Single Vanos seal kit in the UK.
Also, is there any real benefit to the 'anti rattle kit' offered by beisan and others? What does it do?

Beisan are the people to go to. I've just repaired the VANOS in my M3 using their kit with their instructions being very comprehensive. I'll let you know if it's worked. When I last checked the codes didn't appear once I cleared them with the car idling. Before, at hot idle a VANOS control code would always ping back straight away after clearing it. It certainly seems more responsive than before and has lost a 'delay' it had in throttle application. www.beisansystems.com/procedures/single_vanos_rattle_procedure.htmTheir UK branch is Hack Engineering which is where I got my Beisan kit from ; the Valve block seals and the refurbished solenoid pack in my case. www.hackengineering.co.uk/product-category/engine/bmw-m52/The anti-rattle kit is more silencing a design flaw in the VANOS itself. I know on my car if the some dealers heard the S54s rattling they would leave as the new replacement units started rattling anyway. There are some circumstances where a rattle shouldn't be ignored on an S54 (cam bolts and oil pump drive) but I'm not sure about the M52. The other place you can go is X8R: x8r.co.uk/products/bmw/bmw-vanos-repair-kits

Thanks for that.
Google found the X8R site, but they only seem to sell double Vanos kits, so I thought it worth asking. Maybe worth a phone call in the morning.
Hack engineering don't seem to have any stock for 3 or 4 weeks, which is a bit if a pain. Perhaps worth calling to ask, although their prices are near double those of X8R.
The beisan guide makes it seem A simple enough job though, so once I've got the bits and a set of timing tools in happy to attack it with confidence.

I think you just don't use all the bits from a twin kit?
Sold my E39 a while back (a twin vanos) before fitting a kit I bought and haven't got round to putting it up for sale yet. Pretty sure it's an X8R kit from memory (https://x8r.co.uk/products/bmw/bmw-vanos-repair-kits/bmw-double-twin-dual-vanos-seals-upgrade-repair-set-kit-m52tu-m52-m54-m56-with-gaskets) - yours for £50 posted?

The reason why they don't have stock is because they import the seals etc from Beisan ; After ordering something for my M3 from there I've been stung big time on postage (around £35 to send a fascia/Double DIN adaptor that is a true plug and play item : I paid around £25/30 pastage for a secondhand Snap-On Voltage tester when I last order!) I waited around 2 weeks for my solenoid pack to arrive, which is less than what it would have cost for the Beisan kit landed to my door from the 'states.
The Beisan seals are Viton and in a tricky to get size. I know when some M3 owners tried to source the bang on size it got quite pricey. If the X8R items are Viton too that may be a winner.
I say that as my pressure regular seal has squared off again after 7k and April last year. Those seals were from BMW.

The X8R ones says they're viton and what you said sort of ties in with what I've read that either kit works as well as the others - makes sense if they're the same bits!

You can change the seals without the timing tools. I'll have to ask but it involves keeping the splines aligned once they are removed. I'll ask someone who has done it before. he was making out it was a 30 minute job tops.

I spoke to people who'd done it before and it's an hour or two, taking your time. That depends if a PO has been at the cam cover with the silicone or not. I gather (as you do, ChasR) that it's just the VANOS insert you have to remove - timing isn't affected at all.

I think you just don't use all the bits from a twin kit? yours for £50 posted? A generous offer sir, I shall see if they can do a kit for a single vanos setup, as the rocker gasket will be different on the twin, otherwise it seems a good option.
