Hi I'm trying to find somewhere that can adapt some driveshafts for a project. One side is subaru and the other is mgf and I need them ether cutting down and re joining or cut down and resplining to a specifc length. Does anyone know of anywhere in the yorkshire area that can do this as I'm struggling to find anywhere that will touch driveshats. Cheers Andy

Is there enough meat on them to actually re-spline them? Normally they waist up to the spline, not down.
Problem then is they're case hardened - so the outer is rock hard - makes re-splining them much more difficult.
That leads back to chopping, sleeving and welding them, but most companies won't do it because of the liability issues - it's impossible to guarantee that they won't crack where they're welded.

If this is on a small chassis Triumph I'm pretty sure that people are finding that there is a Subaru CV that fits straight on the Rover shaft and that shafts exist at a workable length.
Shaft usually used is the Rover 100 (Metro) LH from manual transmission. The auto one is a little shorted (20mm maybe) as is the short side MGF one.
The alternative is to have the bars made from scratch from someone like DaveMac propshafts (there are others) though that will be relatively costly.
What exactly are you trying to do?

To be honest i reckon you might be better going to a engineering place than anywhere based on cars or motorsport. If you are confident of the length you need then just ask them to join them as strongly as they can and that they have to be true .
Might be worth a shot who knows ?

Thanks for the replys I am putting a subaru diff in my herald I havent even thought of existing shafts I just assumed that the cv joints would have a different spline fitting as they were from different manufacturers it would certainly save some money if there was something already existing that would do the job! I don't currently know how long the driveshafts need to be as I need to get it all built up to messure it I'm just weighing up my options at the moment. I have found a company in newcastle that will friction weld the shafts for £110 each but I was hoping to find somewhere local so I wouldnt have to post them. I will try some engineering comapnys to see if any of them can help. Cheers Andy

If they do any size for £180 a side i would say thats good value . Always worth getting quotes elsewhere and perhaps googling to see what others on other forums have done .

No idea on the materials used I'm afraid.
Autocross cars aren't exactly low stress usage so would hope they are made of something decent and heat treated.
You can likely get a decent machine shop with gear cutting equipment to make you a driveshaft to the spec you want. I can't see them doing it for less than these guys though.

Cheers Andy Then you need to read my post again and also get yourself over to the Club Triumph and Sideways Technologies forums and do a search. There is (at least one) a combination of OE parts that works with no need for anything bespoke. The Rover 100 LH shaft from a manual TX car is the one - outer CV is the same as MGF. Not sure about the Subaru details for the inner as the diff is still under my bench and has no CVs with it....... Nick

Andy, I can cut, sleeve and weld them in the lathe if you get stuck but I won't put any guarantee's on it long term If there is enough meat on them, Supergear just around the corner from me might respline them for you if possible.

John sleath in Doncaster would be worth contacting, he might know who to recommend if nothing else.

I’ve run sleeved and welded shafts on a couple of cars but they tend to snap if you do a lot of hard launches . Got gb shafts on both my track cars now with ford 100mm lobro joints £330 a pair . Still have sleeved ones on my Volvo powered camper but that gets an easy life . I slot the sleeve and weld along the shaft both sides as well as the ends .
