As title really the Toyota build is well under way and I have no trouble getting nice little midboxes in a straight through 2.25" id. But I'm not 12 and as much as I love noise I want this daily to be quiet. I'm short of space under the car and I'm looking for something I can weld into my own system. I toyed with IS200 back boxes or Merc. But they're all far to long. Compact, free flowing and quiet. Any companies make such a thing or am I gonna be buying bronze wool and perforated tube to build my own. If I wanted a 8" exit and loud as curse word the world is my oyster. Here's a pic of the ride in question. 2018-01-09_09-47-53 by A Stonehouse,

It's all dependant. My 4 litre Cherokee has a cat, a glass pack custom chrome centre silencer and then a VERY long tailpipe and its quiet, refined yet powerful sounding. BMW E28 has a pair of the type of stainless 'straight through' silencers that a custom exhaust place would use, in stock locations, so a short tailpipe but because it has 2 boxes it's also sporty, without being overbearing, droning or even intrusive with the windows up. If you can fit 2 'straight through' middle boxes or a large one and have a long tailpipe run with a sensible size tailpipe it really helps limit noise. Even my brothers Demio has one stainless backbox and a cat, and a 3" outward rolled pipe and that isn't barryboy-tastic. It's loudish, and sounds like a frenetic Japanese hatchback but it isn't screaming 'LOOK AT ME AND MY 1.3 LITRE WITH A B&Q GUTTERING EXHAUST' because the silencer is a good quality one.

Thanks rich, I wil try the two straight through ones. I purchased one and was looking for something with a bit more silencing ability.
The one on the IS300 is the size of a coal scuttle and sounds amazing at full chat but drones badly at motorway speeds.

Its currently engineless while I find a big enough shoehorn to fit the 3S-GE I have from a Celica. Theres a build thread somewhere in readers rides.

I too am having this problem I have a 1.3 with a straight through 2 inch exhaust and a scorpion motorcycle back box and it's loud, on the motorway the drone is horrible and of ear bleeding proportions I have a plan I don't mind it being loud but the motorway thing has to change so I'm going to build a hertz holme resonator which should stop the drone. Plan B is a power flow back box but thats 120 quid and ill lose the lovley rolled tip on the bike silencer. Dan

Dan You could cut off the tip and weld on the one you like, But make sure the silencer is what you want first, I used to make exhaust systems and the larger the box the quieter it should be, I have a j reg Peugeot 106 it only has one back box no cat (standard) and the original rear box died so I replaced it with a standard Box from Euro car parts, it wasn't the same as the original one had a internal pipe that looped around inside and the replacement goes straight through, it now sound like a mk1 escort 🤣

Moral lof this story, if your exhaust is to loud your engine isnt powerful enough. Dan
