My daughter is after her first car. A 2005 Vauxhall Corsa 1.2 - circa 2005 I've been laid up sick, so I couldn't check it out with her, but I told her to check for mayo in the oil filler. Alas there is a little The owner said, just a bit of condensation..... Is a bit of mayo acceptable for a car that has been used sparingly around town, or it is a case of run away, because the head-gasket is on its way out. Advice greatly received

Short runs getting warm then cooling is fine , thats normal looking to me . I really would not worry about that .

That's very normal, in fact that's better than most!
From the colour of it i'd say its had pretty regular oil changes?

I've had a cap literally full of mayo before on an air-cooled VW (i.e. no head gasket or water in the engine), purely down to doing mostly shorter runs.
I'd not even have noticed the 'mayo' on the cap in the picture if I were looking to buy a water cooled car - looks like nothing to me.

Looks reet to me. To be fair these engines suffer more with timing chain cover gasket failure causing heavy oil emulsification and loss of coolant, resulting in timing chain and bottom end wear. Also the sump strainers block with carbon causing the timing chain and bottom end to wear, as well as the oil filter collapse and disintegrate to the same effect. The chains do also just wear, and I've had a few suffer failed hydraulic lifters and the oil pressure switches and timing end crank oil seals fail causing heavy oil leaks and the oil pressure switch failure causes oil to be forced up the wiring loom and into the ecu causing ecu failure unless the rubber seal in the oil switch plug is removed. Not trying to be a doom monger, if you clean the sump pickup and keep on top of oil changes and fit a new OPS they ain't too bad.
