Hello chaps,
I have a project in mind and I'm looking for a bit of advice. I've inquired on a couple of other relevant places, but here there seem to be quite a lot of folks up for a laugh with their vehicles.
Long story short; I'm thinking of getting a LWB Vitara (preferably diesel as this would be a daily ideally) and, at the recommendation of a guy I spoke to on a well-known Vitara group (other Vitara groups are available), drive it around for a month or two to see if it needs any major overhauling, or if it's bingpot for using it as the basis for Frankenpeugeot.
Then the idea would be to take the body off the chassis and leave everything else (engine, trans etc) as complete as possible and throw a 309 body on it and the end result would be a retro 4x4 daily that can be used as a lane toy.
I already have a 309 (it's sitting in the driveway asking me for a new engine at the moment, but I'm thinking a bit more outside the box).
Has anyone here done something like this?
What are the major pitfalls/problems with it?
Are there any other cars anyone would recommend using as a basis? I'm not married to the Vitara, it's just the first thing that popped into my head with the ladder chassis setup, and the LWB has almost an identical wheelbase to the 309, also they tend to be available for not lots of money.
How would insurance work? Since the chassis would remain unaltered, would it be as simple as running, taxing and insuring it as a 2.0 diesel Vitara, as on the log book?
This isn't going to be an immediate thing, just one that's been running about in my head for a short while.
Any help and advice would be welcome.
