I think you know what to do.....
When was the last time you saw a mk5 xr3i?
Between the two you could be sat on a very good nest egg in a few years time....

Now we know where all the mk5 are going! So Xr3 for immediate use, RS stored awaiting cheaper import tax.. Depending upon work required to fix it to worthwhile standard. You didn't mention your assessment of cabrio chaos, if it's pure organ donor or another needy but deserving recipient once others were sorted. Assuming you have space, time, sanity, $ &/or freedom left. If required was 3dr tailgate shared with 5dr?

Tailgate was shared with 5 dr but somehow 3dr cars are popping up everywhere! I am skint now. No more cars till i get a bit of time and money together.

On friday I decided to take the Rs for a spin. But the ignition didnt so much as click Tried to charge it, but it wouldnt take, so its dead, deceased, and drained! In to town I went and bought a new battery in Halfrauds. Brought it home. Popped the old battery out and thought "thats a lot of rust". DSC_1402 by quickrack, on Flickr Bad pic but you get the idea. Got a light, bent down for a look and ......curse word! DSC_1403 by quickrack, on Flickr curse word curse word curse word. Saturday dawned and I went back for a second look. Deffo need to remove the screen. But its not a big hole. And it will be well hidden. Plus I have a spares car or two. So a trip back into town for blades resulted in these. IMG_1517776339502 by quickrack, on Flickr Now I just need to get the screen out without breaking it.

sick to find that surprise alright but at least you have a good stock of spares and cuts.
Are you planning on having the Rs and xr3i on the road or just play it by ear?
Best of luck with the projects, will be following your thread!

Who knows. It's a better shell but.....

With my own limited restoration skills, I'd probably stick with the better shell and the with the Irish reg, it'd be on the road quicker and cheaper with no VRT due. Saying that the RS would be a more 'desirable' model to most and if I was able to restore it on my own, I would. I wouldnt like to have to chosse but suppose you're in a nice position having to decide on which rare Escort to restore first.

I can attempt to do a "rolling" resto on it.

Liking this a lot. When you take a small interest in a car you recently bought and you give it a month and all of a sudden you have 4 of them. Happens all too often Enjoying the progress, Best of luck with them.

So today I had a semi religous experience! Well I had a holy one.... I do have a soft spot for the RS2000s. It will be good to get it back on the road and to have the forgotten RS live on the roads again!

New tools are always good. I intend to cut the cracked windscreen out, but I was waiting as the heated front screen is a special order. I didnt want to start and be waiting on it. Its come in to the glazier now so I can start to repair the battery tray etc.
I also cut the rot out of the boot lid. Hopefully tomorrow (day off, but kids & wife in school) will see progress. Wish me luck.received_1935445103156531 by quickrack, on Flickr Rusty muckDSC_1756 by quickrack, on Flickr Choppy chop!DSC_1758 by quickrack, on Flickr

Finally finished all the assignments for the course I was on. To celebrate I......worked on an old car I cut a section out of the rotten red bootlid. Inside is fine ,so I am going to use it to repair the rusty bit of the silver car.. Therefore lots of cutting and fitting , and filing, trialling, snipping, trying, grinding and more trial fits, has it near. Well its tacked in. I spent a HUGE amount of time getting it to fit all of the way around, corners lined up and in-line across the bottom. It took for ever and I still ended up some overly big gaps. I can get behind it though so I bent up a piece of copper pipe and I will hold it behind to bridge the gaps.DSC_1908 by quickrack, on Flickr DSC_1909 by quickrack, on Flickr DSC_1910 by quickrack, on Flickr

Certainly looked impressive seeing so much cut away at once! Shame it couldn't be used as a template to trim the replacement metal. Obviously you will manage regardless of the obstacles you create for yourself Still glad to see the important effort being made.

After much messing about and problems with my welder, I was advised by Blackpopracing to put a new steel liner in. What a transformation! So, much tacking and much finger sander work occurred to get to this point. But the repair is welded in place finally. Now I have a question. Do I need to fill in all the wee holes etc and grind them or do I give it a wee skim of filler and primer?blackpopracing DSC_2229 by quickrack, on Flickr DSC_2230 by quickrack, on Flickr
