Brief history. I own a 1972 Ford escort Estate for years now. Its heavily modified/tuned. Its also old and my wife wont let our kids out in it. She's afraid it'll kill them in an accident. Fair enough I say and started thinking about another car more suitable. Now here in Ireland we have several considerations you might not know about. Any car imported must pay import duty. Until it reaches 30 yrs old this is on a chart and easily figured out. Unless its rare or the sporty version. So every Clio is there except the Williams for example. This will be important in a sec. I put a wanted ad on the Irish Ford Escort Owners Club facebook page looking for a 2 door escort for cheap, expecting to end up with a base model or even (shudder) a diesel After a wee while I heard about an RS for sale but didnt think it would be within my €500 budget. It wasnt. He wanted £500. This turns out to be €643 So a quick search around happened for a trailer to borrow and off the missus and I went. We came home with this 98595ml example. Obligatory first fill up shot DSC_0212 by quickrack, on Flickr Daughter approves DSC_0227 by quickrack, on Flickr Wife approves. So far so good lads.... DSC_0230 by quickrack, on Flickr I definitely approve lol DSC_0233 by quickrack, on Flickr I has power bulges......Ahem.. IMG_20170808_135128_024 by quickrack, on Flickr Happy Days at small money.

Niki (wife) put up the extra cash needed and the next day I sat at the computer to figure out what, if anthing the taxbasta....taxman was going to want. Turns out that if the car is worth less than €2000 there is a flat charge. Its €720!!!!!! Thats 100 more than I paid for the entire car!! Just to get a license plate. So its getting officially exported back to Northern Ireland and I'll restore it. In 2022 it'll be 30 yrs old and cost €220 to import. A poke around happened anyway. Nice spoiler. FB_IMG_1502223072128 by quickrack, on Flickr Dang. Need a hatch then. DSC_0254 by quickrack, on Flickr And those badges are wrong. IMG_20170807_013500_491 by quickrack, on Flickr This is the correct type. 00002 by quickrack, on Flickr I'll just quickly check ebay.......Holy Hell they are expensive. After recovering from the shock of the Cosworth tax on these cars/parts I starting looking into alternatives. Turns out to be a plethora of Mk5 Escort groups on facebook. And on one I spotted an old neglected "what are these worth ad". So I messaged the man. He asked £15 posted and I had his arm off at the elbow DSC_0437 by quickrack, on Flickr They need a tart up but I can afford elbow grease. Those wheels (saff coss) need to go. And that arch looks a bit crusty. Same the other side too. DSC_0251 by quickrack, on Flickr It has some lovely goodies, alloy tanks, Sparco strut braces front and rear. Bilstein coilover shocks that are lower at the rear oddly. And it sounds nice. Has a stainless system from the downpipe back. MOV_0223 by quickrack, on Flickr Interior is lovely no rips or fag burns. DSC_0265 by quickrack, on Flickr DSC_0268 by quickrack, on Flickr Orrible handbrake and gearlever have to go. Sourced a H/B lever but still not got a knob....Also got the bonnet release bit. The baling twine is not a good "look" lol. DSC_0267 by quickrack, on Flickr DSC_0270 by quickrack, on Flickr Bit more tomorrow then.

These always seem to get forgotten about and rot into oblivion so nice to see one being saved. I defiantly think this particular shape escort has gotten better with age (at least in my eyes) big fan! Look forward to seeing your progress!

Good to hear you've the patience & space to keep it until tax is more affordable & very worthwhile to get it & spend the time getting it right before cars/parts become too rare to do the job to the same standard easily. Shocking how quickly & thoroughly they can disappear after people start dumping them for silly money.

Tried on a set of Ford Optional Extra wheels a mate gave me,gratis! Unsure. DSC_0342 by quickrack, on Flickr DSC_0341 by quickrack, on Flickr Fusebox was looking odd (even had a fuse with extra fuse-wire) so I tried the local motorfactors etc for fuses/relays but they had nothing. Quick trawl on ebay netted some 2nd hand ones. DSC_0425 by quickrack, on Flickr Surprisingly hard found!! DSC_0428 by quickrack, on Flickr Stick on trim on the rear offside looked horrid so I eased it off.... DSC_0648 by quickrack, on Flickr A bit wanghy LOL. That'll need finding. Then I was told of a mate, who had bought a 92 cabrio to nick the engine out of. He has a fiesta he is going to fit it in. And a pinto'd arched Mk1 escort, and an immaculate Mk2 Escort Estate and a MADevelopments turbo-diesel escort mk6 van. Cool dude. Want to see them? Anyway the cabrio was scrap money and the suspension and a few other bits are shared. So I traded 3 RS 13"wheels for it and dragged it home. DSC_1001 by quickrack, on Flickr Started taking bits off it. DSC_1007 by quickrack, on Flickr Swapped a set of wheels for the car eventually so I used the cash to buy another set of wheels. These I sanded and sprayed up satin black. DSC_0991 by quickrack, on Flickr DSC_0992 by quickrack, on Flickr Fitted. I like them..... DSC_0994 by quickrack, on Flickr Sons No 2 & 3 DSC_0995 by quickrack, on Flickr DSC_0997 by quickrack, on Flickr The 3rd 92 escort appears next As usual comments, criticism or abuse are welcomed.... The first set of Ford accessory wheels had me thinking white paint as period fashion, since they hadn't the character of the Cosworth lattice. Extra size of the new wheels helps. Looking forward to what happens.

Thanks for the replies. Yeah its difficult to get kids interested in cars but they all prefer this to the estate (harumpf) The wheels (1st set) are in need of a refresh so i might as well tart them up just enough to see how they look, if I painted them white. The 17's look way better than the 15's I think. Might not end up as standard as originally planned... I was told its easy to fit Mondeo/Jag calipers and 300mm disc's to these and the brakes are not stunning..... Brought son No 4 and littlest girl to a local J based show. They enjoyed it so much that when monday dawned they ran past the family Mazda 6 to the garage thinking they were going in the RS and quite disappointed to find we were using the normal boring daily. That bodes well for more Show days. And pics of said show. Surprised to see the Legend as photo-worthy but glad, as I think they looked great (especially compared to bland predecessor, & their facelift). Can't have sold many anywhere & probably so forgotten to be relatively cheap (until it needs parts; glad it's not my sort of car).
Just noticed the cabrio's wheels, that's a LOT of spokes in the wheel collection!

Thats said, for the sake of only 180 euros per year (720 spread out over 4 years) would you not just want to have the car for your use and pleasure? Forgive me but it seems penny wise and pound foolish.

So anyway. A lot of thinking happened then. After I recovered from that I realised a donor would be a good idea. As well as the tailgate, I want to replace the side glass. Its all etched with the English numberplate. But I'll have an Irish one. So the hunt was on for another 92 hatchback. But what I found, while completely filling the role of donor...........kills me to break. A 10 hr round trip (with NO dramatics whatsoever) brought this home. Obligatory first fuel station photo. DSC_1085 by quickrack, on Flickr DSC_1086 by quickrack, on Flickr DSC_1087 by quickrack, on Flickr DSC_1088 by quickrack, on Flickr DSC_1089 by quickrack, on Flickr DSC_1120 by quickrack, on Flickr DSC_1122 by quickrack, on Flickr DSC_1123 by quickrack, on Flickr DSC_1125 by quickrack, on Flickr DSC_1129 by quickrack, on Flickr He said it drove in. I want to attach a battery and see if it goes. But if I do that, and it drives, I wont want to break it. And its a good donor for the RS plus a 1.8 zetec to sell or store or fit in the estate. But he has another, red Mk5 hatchback 2dr. Nicer inside and a good tailgate on it.... Very at a loss as to what to do.
