A few years ago, I was heavily into these cars.
I learned about the V6 swap on these little buggers, and that's what really pushed me into the "Let's see is I can stuff this engine into..." phase of my life that I've embraced. The MR2 is really the car that started it all for me in some respects.
I've built several of these things. I love em- they're great little mid engine, fun cars.
I tried to buy a few of these things from an old guy in a run down garage outside of Cleveland, around 5 years ago. They were all fairly tatty, all of them needed work. I was just going to V6 'em and flip em.
He wasn't interested in selling, said he'd had them for 17 years and was going to "fix them up one day". That's cool, I left him with several pictures of the black one that I'd built and on the back of each picture was my name and phone number, in case he changed his mind someday. I moved on and forgot about the guy, his cars and really MR2's in general.
A few weeks ago, I was getting voice mail messages from an old guy saying "Hi, this is Ray, I've got an MR2 and could you please call me back." I thought; "MR2? Psshh, I don't do those anymore- there's no money in those things in the states" and ignored the calls for a few days. Something told me to call the guy back, it might turn out to be something cool.
So I called back. It was the same guy, who had saved my number all those years, because of those pictures. He stuck them on the wall and when it came to get his favorite MR2 running again, he wanted to know if I'd do it for him. Long story short- It's getting a new engine!
V6 you ask? Nope. Stock BHP 2.0L? Nope.
It's getting a 260 BHP Gen 4 2.0L from a Caldina. Have I ever done one of these turbo engine swaps? Nope.
The way I see it- Once you figure out WHY you should do something, the HOW takes care of itself. This one- is for Ray, the little 82 year old man who wants his favorite car running again.
