Is it just me, or does anyone else get genuinely pleased when you take your car on a long trip, and it performs without fault? I know I shouldn't be cos I maintain it and it should do it's job, but was genuinely pleased when a 17 year old snotter of a £200 Vectra did 250 miles in one go ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png)

I know where you are coming from, once the Imp is warm and 'in the zone' the smiles per miles factor goes through the roof especially on faultless long trips.
I've used it to jump start other peoples dead moderns on the roadside on several occasions too,now that really is satisfying....

to me , doing its job is a 24 mile round trip commute , so in that regard my il'l 20 year old pug performs faultlessly day in day out , though I would have no qualms about driving any distance in it....I just haven't the occasion to yet.

I expect our 27 year old dailies (Ford Falcon and Laser) to make long journeys without any trouble. Similarly my '71 Wolseley 1300. I bought that for $505 sight unseen on the local equivalent of ebay in 2006 and drove it 275 miles home at night sweet as. Dailied for eight years in all weathers. I realise you in the UK and other parts of the world where the roads are salted like to keep your retros for special occasions and summer only but here in New Zealand we are fortunate enough to be able to drive anything all year round.

I go everywhere in mine, I love the look you get from people when you tell them you commute in it every day.

I think it was captain slow...james may...who said that potential distance travelled to breakdown is illogical in an old car as the car doesn't know how far it has travelled ie; if it has happily done 20 x10 mile trips it will equally do 1 x 200 mile trip without breaking sweat!

I bought a £500 Fiat Multipla last year to get my little family to Devon from Aylesbury for a week and then straight up to Pocklington in North Yorkshire. I half expected at least something to go wrong but was pleasantly surprised to the contrary 😀It's been so good that we've still got it !

I have a 2003 Renault avantime that I've brought on trips abroad without trouble or fear, I'm nervous when I bring my 2012 Land Rover to the shops.

I always hope to make it but breaking down is sometimes an opportunity to see new places ( somewhere you would never have paused) and meet new people ( recovery services - mostly good fellas)!

Never surprised, I take it for granted the Hunter will get me there and back - because it always has done If anything, I'm surprised by the OP question as I've never thought about it before

Same here with my Acty. That was just taking it 8 miles to the mot centre but after standing for a year and starting a few times without moving anywhere I was impressed that the battery didn’t lose any charge and the engine ran faultless from start to finish on an icy day that had seen snow thirty minutes earlier. Even the choke could be pushed back in after about 5 minutes.

I've done a few thousand miles in my Delorean in the 11 years of ownership, one particular holiday over to France was 2000 miles over a 10 day period. Broke down once (not the holiday trip) with a broken fan belt. Was quite funny, AA lad turned up, looked like he was about 2 days from leaving school, he did not have a 'scooby,' my missus filmed me changing it while he stood & watched!

This is very true. I use my BMW 520i (e28) everyday to commute to work and back. Apart from some minor wear and tear issues (which will be addressed) it always starts first time and drives great and returns reasonably good mpg. I've covered over 4K since August.

Our 1999 1.8T Passat gets dailied. It's now done 260,000 miles and gets used like any modern would. As it's getting on a bit and smaller than the A6, then it's better for those trips on more rural lanes, but it's still good on the motorway. Plenty of power on those long inclines, even in stock 150bhp form.

My whole plan with the Polo is to get it reliable enough that I can use it to get anywhere! So that I can use it to get to all the shows.

then straight up to Pocklington in North Yorkshire. Pock's in East Yorks ![:P](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/tongue.png) Waaaay back in ooh 2009 maybe my BIL and I set off from York, aiming for Tavistock in Devon to pick up a 1995 Ford Probe he's accidentally bought off eBay. For £50. And we went in my '89 Bluebird, which ran... and ran... and ran... I think we were in Devon for about half an hour or something daft like that and then drove back. All in a day, 750 miles. Incidentally the Probe ran fine too save from a wonky battery. Saw loads of modern breakdowns though.

Back with no dramas as well, 500 miles this weekend. I think it's because I've never got enough money to buy a nice version of whatever I have so buy shot and spend what money I have fixing it, so I'm used to early breakdowns then amazed when my own handiwork actually works ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png)
