It's clutch and gearbox swap time, fought with the old clutch to get it off, car has been standing for 18months, the friction plate appears to have been a little stuck to the flywheel. Would I be ok with some 1000 wet and dry and brake cleaner to clean it up

ive done this before and had no problems (make sure the plate is servicable though before refitting )

Quick rub over with sandpaper and all is fine. The friction plate will soon take any curse word off the mating surfaces of the flywheel and pressure plate!

Personally I'd be tempted to be brutal* - if that doesn't work then you can start swapping parts etc.
* I'm not a fan of "the book says...", I prefer to make things work ! If the clutch isn't siezed (it sounds like it's not) just run the engine up to temp with the car in neutral. Turn off - clutch down and into first - start the car in gear with the clutch down. Lift the clutch gently - creep forward - clutch down - repeat until all is ok.
