Thanks guys for the floor cracking info. Just out of interest, how much did it set you back to rectify? Cheers I love how a turbo that may go bang but is easy to replace scares you, but the potential of a cracked chassis you take in your stride  I find it really interesting the things different folk feel comfortable with - for me a cracked chassis issue is "walk away" territory (granted I repaired a cracked centre tunnel in my Volksrod) but a turbo going bang is just an excuse for a bigger turbo lol You're reading far much into this! Before this thread I didn't know about the BMW problem, and I'm sure I wasn't the only one, hence why I asked for a rough idea of the price. If only we could all know everything about cars ;-)

Something a bit different, and (in my humble opinion) a smidgen cooler* than any BMW, Skoda or Honda mentioned - Volvo V70 T5 Wagon? Lots of potential with these, I've had two and they were brilliant things. *I listen to African Jazz, wear tweed, have a stupid moustache and ride dilapidated bicycles for fun, therefore your definition of cool may differ to mine. Did I buy my W124 off you? He was scarily similar sounding. He did have a beard and long white hair however. Nope, no beard or white hair here.

Does anyone have any suggestions for fast and/or interesting cars that can squeeze in before the car tax hike of 2001 onwards for bigger engined cars kicks in? Under £3k No diesels due to imminent tax pillaging possibilities! I'm thinking Audi TT, Bmw 3-series inc. convertible, Audi A3/s3 etc, basically as new as possible to get in before 2001. Cheers. How about a Lexus LS400 or GS? Personally, I'd have either over any of the cars mentioned above and I reckon (in no doubt being candid) you'd get a far more reliable car too. Anyway, another possible option if nothing more.

Wouldn't dismiss an IS200 Sport either.

Wouldn't dismiss an IS200 Sport either. It's a no on the bigger Lexi's from me, but the IS200 sport has 150 is bhp so is not too shabby. They're very reasonable as well. It's a shame Honda never got the front end of this car sorted out for it's last 2 incarnations as this looks good on paper with 180+ bhp:

Even though its an Auto this looks pretty tempting coming in just under a grand: www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201711201405227?I had a 1.8 VTEC auto Accord for a few years - was dull and a bit gutless but this may be a bit better? At least I could legitimately say "when I was in NAM" ;->

As a Honda fanboy for many years and current owner of an Accord, I'd wouldn't say no to that V6 (auto box would be my only concern, not too sure how reliable they are?) but for grand it's got to be worth a punt. As for the Prelude just make sure it's not mutton dressed as lamb - many have been abused but find a good one and you'll be on a winner.

Must admit hearing about that 3-series 'cracking' costing around a grand to fix has left me cold towards them now.
At least if I spent a grand on an Accord or 1500 on a Prelude then if something terminal crept in I could just kiss it goodbye.
Other than a Celica head gasket going I've never had any terminal problems with Japanese cars and I've had a few over the years.
