With a pending job change which means surrendering my nice practical Volvo V40 with all the trappings of modern connectivity I'm going be sorting my own car again.
Not wishing to spend £000s on a depreciating asset I'm probably going older but will miss the ease of integrated connectivity. Any one got direct experience or recommendations around aftermarket DAB & Bluetooth head units.
Had some less than effective DAB units about 8 years ago, guess they're better now but not sure about the Bluetooth/handsfree functionality?
Many thanks in advance to all.

I have tried a couple of Bluetooth HUs.
I've given a Double DIN Pioneer a go which TBH was pretty good.
I currently have an Alpine 9887R which a Bluetooth box attached to it that allows BT connectivity as well as plugging in an iPod. Very handy indeed. My other is an all in one Alpine CDE-178BT.
The functionality on both is good but I think the 9887 wins on looks and definitely on SQ ; Bluetooth usability wasn't the core focus of that HU but it does it well.
The 178R is spot on. In my M3 I had the steering controls hooked up so I can change tracks on the steering wheel. Furthermore with my iPhone I can access Siri by holding down the call button. That is very handy in a number of situations. I also get Sat Nav through the speakers too. It also stores my phonebook and recent phone numbers on the phone too. Telephone callback is very good too ; people generally tend to hear me fine.
But most HUs will be OK. If it were me I'd either go with Pioneer or an Alpine as long as the latter has Parrot based Handsfree ; the earlier Siemens efforts were hopeless. How hopeless? I got a Parrot based BT-400 box for my 9887R for over £100 ; they are already going for more money. I got sent the Siemens based BT-300 by accident initially. I was told to keep it and not bother sending it back ; they are known for being plagued with faults.

I've just installed a JVC KD-x441DBT Dab/BT radio in my Nissan and it's a great unit.. The Dab bit depends on where you are in the UK for getting a good signal, I live right down in a valley with almost no signal, but once I'm 1/2 a mile up the road the signal is great.. The BT bit is easy to connect, I've only tried the "hands free calls" bit once and it worked fine, streaming music from my phone via BT is sooooo nice, I can play stuff never heard on the radio I hope this helps and doen't make me sound like I work for JVC which I don't.. lol.

For me I love the Bluetooth music playback!
Sat Nav directions, the lot all come through the head unit. Perfect.
