Further reduced, I want this gone. This will also be up on eBay as of 9pm this evening (01/12).
1985 VW Golf GTi 8 Valve 5 Door in Atlas Grey.
126,000 Miles from new with a detailed service history and original VW owner’s manual.
MOT to November 2018.
Reluctantly up for sale, this car has been my daily driver for the past year and has been a really fun, reliable car to own. I bought it in a very sorry state and spent the next few months re-commissioning it and getting it back up to a good, clean and useable standard. I have since covered just under 10,000 miles in the car commuting and the occasional long drive. Lots of parts have been replaced, cleaned and/or refurbished – including:
- Radiator, all rubber coolant hoses and all new clips
- Heater matrix
- 1x new fuel injector, the rest ultrasound cleaned and spray patterns checked. New shrouds and seals.
- Water pump
- Cambelt and tensioner changed at 118,000
- LUK clutch kit fitted and rear crank seal changed at 121,000
- Gear linkage stripped, cleaned, new bushes etc installed
- Genuine Hella Headlights
- New exhaust system (downpipe back)
- Master cylinder
- New rear calipers, disks, wheel bearings and pads, plus powder coated backing plates and hubs and new hand brake cables
- Front calipers rebuilt with new seals, guide pins and sleeves, new disks and pads, new flexi-hoses
The car also benefits from Bilstein Shock absorbers and Eibach progressive springs on all corners, so she is a touch lower (20mm) than standard. The ride is firm but well damped, not crashy or bouncy – the handling is very responsive with very little body roll. Really good fun on a twisty A road! The original Pirelli P-slot alloys are in good condition and have nearly new Avon’s all round.
This is by no means a show car, there are marks and dings as you would expect from a 32 year old car but nothing serious. Some of the panels are not all the same shade of grey! Generally though the bodywork is straight and clean, there are a couple of rust bubbles on the door bottoms but only very minor and the rear valance is a bit tatty in one corner. The usual Mk 2 rust traps though are all fine on this car and she just flew through an MOT.
The interior is clean and tidy but a little bit tatty in a few places; the driver’s seat has a wear hole in the side bolster (they all do!), the headlining is sagging/coming away at the front and a few pieces of plastic trim are cracked. The sunroof wind seal is also on its last legs – but there are no leaks so I have left as is (if it ain’t broke and all that). The MFA trip computer functions, as well as the hilarious economy shift light and MPG gauge that comes on in 5th gear – a lovely feature of the early K-Jetronic cars!
Two things of note: The power steering pump belt slips when the car is cold, it makes a bit of a noise but that’s all – works fine, I planned to convert back to a manual rack and have one to go with the car. Secondly, the heater control that diverts air to the screen/forward/feet has stopped working and is stuck on the forward setting – I will try to sort this as I think it’s just a cable clip that has popped off.
All in all a good tidy example that has managed to avoid being slammed, stanced and 20v turbo’d by Dub morons. This would suit someone looking for a retro daily that they can improve – plenty of little jobs left to be done, or just use it as is!
£1950 ONO - price reflects the fact its far from perfect but a good, useable car.
