EXTERIOR
The exterior of this RS Mexico is magnificent. Finished in Ford Black, (Code A), it has a deep, mirror gloss shine and is one of only two Black Mexicos registered with the RS Owners Club. The distinctive squared-up nose styling and front air dam is virtually unmarked and informs knowledgeable onlookers to the scarcity of this model only built between January 1976 and July 1978. All the trim is perfect, window rubbers are black and all decals are correct and present. Ford logos can be seen on the genuine Carello halogen headlamps and Altissimo rectangular rear light covers. The underside is very clean and will enable viewers to see the top specification this car enjoys. Minor imperfections to the glass, boot edge and a few stone chips indicate this car likes to be driven and driven hard! Utterly gorgeous and a real show stopper.
INTERIOR
The interior of this RS Mexico offers exhilarating sporting pleasure. The twin high back reclining Scheel front and rear seats in Black fabric, (Code A7) with roll-top head restraints are amazing, perfectly clean and offer incredible support thanks to an expensive retrim by Aldridge. The carpets, door cards and black fascia are virtually unmarked. Supplementary gauges function correctly and the ‘RS’ logo within the five white needle instrument cluster reminds the driver how special this Ford is. Expensive and useful accessories such as the leather trimmed RS steering wheel, Elliot rev counter, Willans 4-point harness and Safety Devices roll cage all play an important part in this driver focused machine.
ENGINE & TRANSMISSION
A period engine build which will be the envy of many with stonking performance quoted at 180bhp from the 2.1 Pinto engine with reliability built in thanks to top specification and quality components. The current owner is a Development Engineer at Ford's Research Centre at Dunton and he really has poured his expertise in this car. The Type-9 five speed gearbox with quick shift has been upgraded to handle the power and enthusiastic use. Incredible!
WHEELS, TYRES & BRAKES
Genuine upgraded RS 6JX13 RS 4-spoke alloy wheels with correct RS centre caps and RS wheel nuts are shod in sticky Toyo Proxes R888 tyres. HiSpec 4-pot alloy brake callipers grip Grp1 vented 247mm discs with EBC Green Stuff pads. Goodridge braided hoses and bias peddle box with custom reservoir complete with Girling cap shed the speed off quickly and safely.
HISTORY FILE
With only around 2,500 Mk2 Ford Mexico’s made, (source Ford RS Owners Club), this car represents a very rare breed! Positioned awkwardly in price and specification between a 1600 Sport and an RS2000 when new the Mexico had a very short production run and therefore is now a highly sought after model amongst collectors. This car is one of just two known to the RS Owners Club finished in Black. Built in November 1976 and registered February 1977 the car had a genuine Black Ford Mexico Service Shell supplied by the Ford Saarlouis plant in 1979. The original shell finished in Signal Green was damaged. Not recorded but noted by the unique Build Plate the history and authenticity of this car can be validated by the current Mk2 Mexico Registrar, Steve Ogle. An incredible history file neatly and chronologically ordered packed with invoices, photo albums and correspondence will also reassure the next custodian. The current owner, Mr Glyn Morgan is a respected member of the RS Community and performed the role of Mk1 Escort Registrar for six years. His knowledge and passion for the marque is impressive and the quest to find a Mk2 Mexico was a challenge only resolved on buying this amazing car. A rare opportunity for the Ford Blue Oval fan.
MOT April 2018, HPI Clear.
